Authenticity (3/5): Source's reliability can be questioned
Alphonso Davies has been one of the best left-backs in the world over the last few years. However, the Canada international has seen a massive drop in form, and his stock has fallen short as well, with injuries plaguing his career so far. The 24-year-old was considered one of Bayern Munich‘s unsellable stars just a couple of seasons ago. However, the Bavarians and the Canadian have not been on the best of terms for some time now.
As such, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Davies has decided not to extend with Bayern Munich and has been linked with a number of clubs. The Canadian has been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United.
GIVEMESPORT has now reported that Davies has asked for a £10 million signing-on fee on top of his £240,000-a-week wages. The report should be taken with a pinch of salt as the source has been known to be wrong at times.
Value (5/5): £10 million signing-on fee not an issue for Davies' quality
Davies has struggled with injuries and form over the last couple of years. However, his talents are not to be brushed aside due to the same. The Canada international showed bucketloads of form at the start of his Bayern Munich career. Having broken into the Bavarians' starting eleven at the ripe age of 19, Davies slotted into the Bayern Munich defensive line like an experienced defender.
With Davies available as a free agent, Manchester United would be able to strike a deal for a very talented left-back for a signing-on fee of £10 million should not be a question at all for INEOS.
Suitability (4/5): The left-wing-back for Amorim's setup
Davies has mostly played as a left-back since the start of his Bayern Munich career, however, he started as more of a left-wing-back for Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps and has also functioned there for the Bavarians a number of times. Additionally, Davies starts as an outright left-winger for Canada.
New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim plans to play a 3-4-3 formation at Old Trafford, as he did with Sporting. As such, the club needs a left-wing back, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out injured more often than they are fit to play. Davies would easily fit into Amorim's setup.
Upgrade? (5/5): Shaw – never fit; and Malacia – a myth
Over the last year and a half, Manchester United have been functioning with an actual left-back as Shaw seems to pick up an injury every time he takes to the field after a month-long injury layoff. Meanwhile, Malacia has not played a single game since July 2023, at this point, even United are uncertain when the once-promising Dutchman will take to the field.
Davies, while injury-prone himself, will be an upgrade over the two left-backs at Amorim's disposal at the moment.
Logic (4/5): A massive personal risk for Davies
The move is a certain no-brainer for Manchester United as Davies is the need of the hour for Amorim's setup to function. However, the same is not the case for Davies, as a move to Old Trafford has not had the best of effects on the careers of a lot of promising players… just ask Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire.
However, if he does manage to perform at the club, it will be a massive comeback story for the Canadian and a win over his critics in Germany.
Whisper+ final verdict – 21/25
Given Amorim’s work with Sporting’s youth prospects, Davies will definitely be in the right hands if he does make the shift to Old Trafford. However, if Real Madrid do make an approach for the Canadian as has been reported earlier, it is a no-brainer for Davies as to where he should shift.
