Newcastle's torrid summer has sunk to new depths after news broke that Johan Manzambi has elected to join Aston Villa over the Magpies.
According to David Ornstein, Manzambi has decided that his future lies at Villa Park, despite Newcastle agreeing a deal with Freiburg earlier in the week.
An 11th-hour swoop from Aston Villa is said to have turned Manzambi's head, who can now look forward to a season of playing in the UEFA Champions League under Unai Emery.
The Swiss midfielder will head over the Midlands in the coming days to complete the transfer following Switzerland's elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Argentina.

Tottenham may have already spent more than £200m on summer recruits, but reports in the UK media suggest that they are not done yet.
According to CaughtOffside, Spurs are considering making a bid for Barcelona's Ferran Torres, who is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Camp Nou.
Torres has become a bit-part player in Catalonia in recent years, and is also the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa. The report states that the fee for the winger would be around the €35m, which is a snip in today's market.
While the Spaniard is reportedly keen to remain in his homeland, another crack at the Premier League is surely tempting for the former Manchester City man.
Chelsea to make a move for Diogo Costa

Chelsea are reportedly interested in bringing in Diogo Costa this summer, with Xabi Alonso unsure about whether Robert Sanchez is good enough to be his number one at Stamford Bridge
According to Ekrem Konur, Costa has emerged as Chelsea's number one transfer target this summer. They are said to be ahead of PSG in the race for Costa's signature, who is now free to push for a transfer now that Portugal are out of the World Cup.
To get Costa out of Porto this summer, all interested parties will have to trigger his release clause of 60m, which isn't all that bad for one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in Europe.
If Chelsea do manage to get this deal over the line, it would surely spell the end of Robert Sanchez' time at the club.
