Here at Football Whispers, we take pride in educating Canadians on legal sportsbooks and online casinos, including sign-up offers, promo codes, and reviews. As a self-funded media outlet, we have been covering the Canadian sports betting landscape, including soccer-specific betting news and advice, for over a decade. We’ve been featured in The Guardian, ESPN, The Independent, and other prominent global publications.
Sportsbook and bonus reviews in Canada
Primarily focusing on soccer, our team of editors and writers leverages their knowledge and experience in the sports betting industry to provide detailed reviews of legal Canadian sportsbooks like Tonybet, Bet365, and Sports Interaction. We prioritize Canadian soccer betting, including the men’s national team, MLS, and the CPL (Canadian Premier League).
That doesn’t mean we don’t cover other sports. Our reviews and promo code articles detail best practices for using time-sensitive bonuses for NHL, MLB, NBA, and NFL betting. We also touch on other popular sports and leagues in Canada, like golf, tennis, Formula 1, and UFC/MMA.
Betting legislation in Canada
Single-event betting via online operators such as BetMGM (Ontario), Paripesa, and Bet99 has been legal in Canada since 2021, when the Canadian government passed Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act. This bill gave Canadian provinces and territories the authority to establish their own betting jurisdictions and bring in revenue that would have been lost to third-party offshore betting.
So far, Ontario is the only province to privatize sports and online casino betting. By 2022, Ontario had opened its regulated market, accepting applications from notable operators like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Pinnacle. There are now several other legal Ontario betting sites.
Alberta is nearing the end of its long journey to legalize online sports betting. The province passed Bill 48, the iGaming Alberta Act, in May 2025 and intends to open its market in Q1 2026 officially. Several Ontario-licensed operators, including theScoreBet and BetRivers, have already announced their intention to apply for a license.
For now, bettors in Alberta can still place bets and play online casino games through Play Alberta, regulated by Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC), or operators with offshore licenses.
