The opening ceremony of the tournament and the first match are scheduled for June 11, but how far ahead of the official kick off of the tournament will the teams have to provide their squad lists?

In this article, we will take a closer look at the expected World Cup 2026 squad announcement dates and the official squad deadline for the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

When will the final World Cup squads be submitted?

FIFA have confirmed the official deadline date for squad announcements, but the entire process will take place over three stages:

  • May 11 – Preliminary squad announcements (35 to 55 players total, up to five goalkeepers)
  • May 25 – Clubs have to release the selected players
  • June 1 – Final squad announcements (23 to 26 players total, must include three goalkeepers)

The dates above are the final deadlines for each stage, but clubs and national teams can do things earlier than that. In fact, we don't often see teams waiting until the last day of the World Cup squad date to announce their final squads.

This is particularly true for major nations, who tend to announce their squads a few days earlier than the official World Cup squad announcement dates, some even a week or so earlier.

For example, the reigning world champions Argentina have announced their squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on November 11, three days before the deadline day of November 14. The same is true for Spain and the Netherlands, while some other big names did this on November 10, including England, Germany, Portugal, Belgium and Morocco. Brazil have announced their final squad a full week before the deadline.

All in all, we can expect to see many teams announce their final squads at least a few days before June 1, especially with the injury cut-off rules.

What happens if a player gets injured?

FIFA's official injury cut-off rules allow for injured or ill players to be replaced even after final squads are announced and the official deadline has passed. Teams can replace their players up to 24 hours before their first match. Keep in mind that replacements are only allowed for injury or illness and that a medical verification is mandatory.

However, there is also an exception to this rule since goalkeepers can be replaced at any time during the tournament.

Why World Cup squads matter?

Now that we know when are World Cup squads announced in 2026, let's take a quick look at why squad announcements are so important.

While a 26-men squad is more than enough for some teams to pretty much cover all of the quality players in the nation, for some of the biggest national teams, picking 26 players means making some tough decisions.

For example, teams like France, Spain, or England have a huge pool of players to choose from, so selecting the right players for the World Cup squad can sometimes be a difference between a good run at the tournament and going home early.

On top of that, injuries have to be taken into account and once the tournament starts, teams can't call replacements for their outfield players. That means that national teams can't just bring their best 26 players, but instead have to consider positions and pick a balanced team that has enough covers for each position.

World Cup squad announcements – media coverage guide

When it comes to the media coverage of World Cup 2026 squad announcements, major sports news outlets will certainly cover these announcements and offer extensive analysis, especially when it comes to major favourites and the biggest teams. Of course, we will also stay up to date with the official squad announcements.

That being said, the official sources where you can check for preliminary and final squad announcements will be the best source for any new information. This includes the official FIFA website, but don't forget to check the official social media accounts of national teams and their official websites, which will certainly be faster than the FIFA website.
