Including them, only eight nations have ever won the World Cup, so are one of them going to add to their total, or are we going to see a new winner in Canada, United States and Mexico?

The 1942 and 1946 tournaments were not held due to the Second World War. The 1950 tournament used a final round-robin rather than a knockout final.

Overall, there have been 22 World Cup tournaments, with the 23rd set to be played this summer.

Uruguay won the first one in 1930 as the host nation, and are one of three South American countries to lift the trophy.

Italy, England, Germany (formerly split into West Germany and East Germany), Argentina and France have all won as host nations, but 2026 hosts Canada, United States and Mexico have never won the World Cup.

There was no World Cup in 1942 or 1946 due to the Second World War, and it should also be noted that the 1950 tournament used a final round-robin rather than a traditional knockout final.

In terms of this century, interestingly there have been six different winners with Argentina the most recently-crowned in 2022, so it is anyone's guess who is going to pick up the trophy this time around!

Which country has won the most World Cups?

Most World Cup titles in history
Brazil 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002 5
Germany (incl. West Germany) 1954, 1974, 1990, 2014 4
Italy 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006 4
Argentina 1978, 1986, 2022 3
France 1998, 2018 2
Uruguay 1930, 1950 2
England 1966 1
Spain 2010 1

Brazil have won the most World Cups with five in total, including back-to-back in 1958 and 1962, but have not won it since 2002.

Germany (including West Germany) and Italy are tied next on four World Cups each, while Argentina won their third in 2022.

France and Uruguay have two each, while England and Spain have just the one World Cup to their name.

Interestingly, the Netherlands have been runners-up three times without winning it, while Germany (including West Germany) have also been in four finals without lifting the trophy.

Overall, only eight nations have ever won the World Cup, five from Europe and three from South America, so will we see a repeat this summer, or can a nation from another continent finally step up and break the trend?
