There might be a lot of talk about Financial Fair Play and Profit & Sustainability Rules in the media, but we're still expecting to see a summer awash with transfer activity.
Here are some of the biggest and most eye-catching moves we saw in July.
Memorable transfer done deals in July 2024
Another business day is at it's close and clubs across Europe's top five leagues have been busy in the transfer market once again. Here is a run down of the most notable transfer deals done today.
Leny Yoro – Lille to Man United (£52.3m)
Man United haven't made much secret about wanting a new centre back this summer. For a long time it looked like Everton's Jarred Branthwaite would be their man, however, they've caught a few off-guard and announced the £52.3m signing of Lille's 18-year-old Leny Yoro instead. It's widely accepted that Yoro, who was tipped to join Real Madrid, has a high ceiling but some have raised an eyebrow at the fee involved given he only had 12-months left on his current deal. Regardless, you would think Yoro improves the United backline now and for the future.
Michael Olise – Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich (£51.1m)
Bayern Munich fell short in the Bundesliga title race last season and are having somewhat of an overhaul this summer with Vincent Kompany having replaced the outgoing Thomas Tuchel as manager. Evidently, it's not just the dugout where Bayern are opting for change though. Their acquisition of Michael Olise for £51.1m is, as things stands, the biggest transfer of the summer transfer window. The Bavarians clearly have high expectations of the 22-year-old – and we're inclined to concur.
Moussa Diaby – Aston Villa to Al Ittihad (£50.6m)
Moussa Diaby's move to Al Ittihad has long been expected but it's still somehow quite surprising with the former Leverkusen man very much approaching his prime at 25-years-old. That said, it's fair to say things hadn't really worked out for Diaby at Villa. Sure, the club were successful last year but Unai Emery began to prefer alternative options towards the back end of the campaign leaving an exit feel somewhat inevitable. There will be big pressure on Diaby to deliver the goods in Saudi but he's capable – and, quite frankly, could easily compete at the top level in Europe he wanted to.
Amadou Onana – Everton to Aston Villa (£50.0m)
Aston Villa's pursuit of Everton's defensive midfielder Amadou Onana hasn't been kept under wraps particularly well but none of that matters now. The £50m deal has been done with Onana coming in to fill the shoes of Douglas Luiz (more on him in literal seconds) with financial implications of the two deals all about timing. This transfer is a significant blow to Everton though particularly in the context of more takeover talks stalling.

Douglas Luiz – Aston Villa to Juventus (£42.35m)
Douglas Luiz has been a lynchpin for Aston Villa over the last couple of seasons as the Midlands club have grown back into life in England's top flight. With that in mind, it would have been a sad day at Villa Park to say goodbye to the Brazilian midfielder but books had to be balanced and Luiz was the calibre of player if was going to take. Juventus are the beneficiaries of his talents but at £42.35m, the Juve fans will expect him to hit the ground running.
Emile Smith-Rowe – Arsenal to Fulham (£27.1m)
Arsenal have finally waved goodbye to academy product Emile Smith-Rowe. He won't be going far though opting to pen a deal with fellow London club Fulham. When Smith-Rowe first broke onto the scene he looked like being a spark the Gunners had needed for so long but injuries have hampered his progression whilst Arsenal have evolved beyond him now. Mikel Arteta has spoken of being disappointed to lose the midfielder but also recognising you can't stand in the way. If he stays fit, Smith-Rowe could be a very good addition for Fulham.
Artem Dovbyk – Girona to Roma (£26.0m)
We'll be honest, we didn't see this deal coming. Artem Dovbyk was one of the standout stars of La Liga last season impressing at the sharp end of the pitch for Girona as they claimed Champions League football for next season; the Ukraine international scored 24 and assisted eight in 36 league matches. Given Atletico Madrid had also been heavily linked seeing him jump to Serie A – and particularly to a Roma side that finished sixth – is an eyebrow raising move. It's a great signing for Roma though and dose pose questions about players such as Tammy Abraham's future.
