Hot Tip – Sunderland Double Chance

  • Sunderland are unbeaten in their last nine games against Newcastle.
  • Sunderland have picked up three wins and a draw from their last six matches.

Another reason that we have backed Sunderland to win or draw as our main prediction is that Newcastle have only won one of their last six matches in all competitions.

Sunderland vs Newcastle team news

Sunderland

The Black Cats played host to Preston North End on New Year's Day where an early goal from Alex Pritchard set the home side on their way to victory. Shortly before the halftime interval, Nazariy Rusyn put Sunderland 2-0 up and with no further goals in the second forty-five, the hosts kicked off 2024 with three points.

Bradley Dack, Niall Huggins, Dennis Cirkin, Jay Matete and Corry Evans could all miss the big derby match due to injury.

Predicted Lineup: Patterson (GK), Ballard, Alese, Hume, Pritchard, O'Nien, Neil, Ekwah, Bellingham, Rusyn & Clarke

Newcastle

Newcastle made the trip to Liverpool knowing that their away form was poor and any chance of coming away with even a point looked slim, especially given their list of injured players right now. Liverpool dominated the game and ended up winning 4-2, despite missing a penalty. Alexander Isak and Sven Botman scored Newcastle's consolation goals in the second half.

Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson and Javier Manquillo are all injured and won't feature this weekend, while there are also doubts over Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock.

Predicted Lineup: Dúbravka (GK), Schär, Burn, Botman, Livramento, Guimarães, Longstaff, Almirón, Joelinton, Isak & Gordon

Player to Watch: Jack Clarke

Sunderland's 23-year-old forward has been in great form this season, netting twelve times in the Championship.

The former Leeds and Tottenham striker announced himself in English football last season when he scored nine times for Sunderland on their return to the Championship. Having already surpassed his nine-goal tally from the previous campaign, Clarke is enjoying his best-ever goals return of his professional career and we're backing him to impress on Saturday in the Tyne-Wear derby.
