The FA Cup is over and it certainly delivered in 2023-24. The sixth tier side, who are managed by former Wolves defender George Elokobi, beat league clubs Barrow, Stevenage and, most impressively, now Premier League Ipswich on route to the fifth round where they eventually fell to the aforementioned Coventry. The magic though, is well and truly still alive.
Manchester City might have ended this season as FA Cup runners up but you’d be a brave person to bet against them winning the competition next season. This upcoming year looks like being Pep Guardiola’s last at the club and he’ll be desperate to go out on a high. With the Premier League perhaps a stretch as they hunt down five on the spin, the FA Cup could become a focus as the season progresses.
Man United
Man United have been a wreck this season but they still managed to win the FA Cup, which is something they nearly did last year too before coming up short in the final ironically against Man City. With no Champions League football and almost no chance of winning the league, the idea of protecting this trophy will appeal – and it will be a big carrot regardless of who is manager.
Arsenal
Arsenal have won more FA Cup titles than any other team and we have a suspicion they’ll go deep in the competition next season. They’ve shown their quality over the last couple of seasons pushing Man City close in the league but, whilst that is impressive, it’s imperative they start to have something to show for their performances. The FA Cup could prove to be just that.
