Netherlands vs. Sweden: What's the story?
On paper, the Netherlands appeared to be the favourites for first place in Group F, but Ronald Koeman's men have serious work to do over the next two matchdays after being frustrated by Japan in their opening encounter.
Having also picked up three yellow cards in that match, which Japan emerged from with an unblemished disciplinary record, the Dutch are currently occupying third place in the standings owing to their inferior fair-play record to the Blue Samurai.
However, a win by any scoreline on Saturday will immediately take the Netherlands above Sweden thanks to the head-to-head tie-breaker, but defeat coupled with a Japan win over Tunisia would seriously harm their top-two hopes.
As for Sweden, Graham Potter's men came into the World Cup having written a unique chapter of history, becoming the first team to qualify for a World Cup despite finishing bottom of their Qualifying section with zero wins to their name.
The Scandinavians' Nations League performance earned them another shot at qualifying via the playoffs – one they did not pass up – and they consigned their otherwise pitiful preliminary campaign to history by putting five past Tunisia on the opening matchday.
Liverpool's Alexander Isak was the star of the show on matchday one, claiming one goal and two assists, while Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres also came up with one strike and one helper to help Sweden on their way to a comfortable victory.
