What do Japan, Sweden need to make last 32?

Coming into Thursday's showdown, the Japanese lead their Swedish counterparts by one place and one point in the Group F table, courtesy of their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands first up and 4-0 thumping of already-eliminated Tunisia on matchday two.

The Blue Samurai only sit behind group leaders Netherlands on goals scored, and so long as they take at least a point from tonight's game, they will advance to the last 32 of the World Cup.

In contrast, nothing but a win will do for Sweden, who assumed control of the section on the opening day with a 5-1 victory over Tunisia but were served a brutal dose of their own medicine on matchday two, losing to the Netherlands by the same scoreline.

Even if Sweden draw and the Netherlands suffer a shock loss to Tunisia tonight, Graham Potter's men would be consigned to a third-placed finish, owing to their inferior head-to-head record to the 2010 runners-up.

Both sides can also progress to the knockout rounds via a third-placed ranking, although neither will want to leave anything up to chance in Arlington.

The winner of World Cup Group F will not enjoy the easiest knockout ride, though, as Morocco will await them in the last 32, before a more favourable last-16 showdown with either South Africa or Canada.

However, the team that finishes second must take on Brazil for the right to reach the last 16, so victory for both teams ought to be of paramount importance.
