Netherlands vs. Morocco: How did the teams qualify for the World Cup knockouts?

This contest pits together the Group F winners against the Group C runners-up, after the Netherlands overcame a slow start to proceedings to rank first in their section over Sweden, Japan and Tunisia.

Ronald Koeman's side were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw by Japan first up, but they responded emphatically with a 5-1 crushing of Sweden, before easing past eliminated Tunisia 3-1 to finish two points clear of Japan at the summit.

Oranje scored a joint-high 10 goals in the group stage – only Germany and France also managed that many – as Brian Brobbey struck three times, while Crysencio Summerville and Cody Gakpo both netted twice in the group stage.

Meanwhile, Morocco were tipped to give Brazil a good run for their money in Group C, and they did exactly that, only finishing below the Selecao on goal difference after totalling seven points from three games.

The Atlas Lions claimed a respectable 1-1 draw with Carlo Ancelotti's men first up, before eking out a 1-0 victory over Scotland and coming out on top in a six-goal thriller with Haiti on the final matchday.

Morocco's 4-2 win over the latter saw them end up with a goal difference of +3, compared to +6 for Brazil, but they boasted a comfortable four-point advantage over eliminated Scotland in third place.

The Netherlands overcame Morocco 2-1 during the group stage of the 1994 World Cup, and all three meetings between the two nations have ended in that score; the Atlas Lions won a 1999 friendly before Oranje prevailed in a tight 2017 exhibition contest.
