Czech Republic vs. South Africa: What's the story for World Cup 2026 clash?
Seeking to go one better than they did against Mexico during their 2010 World Cup opener, South Africa instead imploded, losing both Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane to second-half red cards as their 2026 campaign began on a sour note.
The Bafana Bafana are rooted to the bottom of Group A as a result, but only goal difference is keeping them behind their upcoming opponents and a potential place in the knockout rounds, while three points could take them above one of South Korea or Mexico depending on what happens in that battle.
However, the statistics make for grim reading for South Africa, who only had three shots, registered 0.07 Expected Goals and posted a mere 12 passes into the opposition's box against Mexico, all of which represent their lowest-ever totals for a World Cup match.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic failed to cling onto a 1-0 lead against South Korea given to them by Ladislav Krejci, as Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu both found the back of the net for the Taegeuk Warriors to deservedly turn the game on its head.
The Czechs posted just 0.83 Expected Goals compared to 2.30 for South Korea, in addition to having just 38% of the ball, but they have not lost their first two games of a World Cup tournament since the 1970 edition.
