While Manchester United have significantly strengthened their attack, reinforcing the defence is also a priority, and a centre-back from Bayern Munich has reportedly caught the eye of the club’s hierarchy.

After spending more than £194m on three attacking signings – Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha – United must now address a defensive unit that has been particularly fragile in recent seasons. Although the Red Devils are keen to challenge Liverpool for their top defensive target, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, a French defender could yet steal the spotlight.

According to Christian Falk, United would like to make Dayot Upamecano their new defensive leader. The 26-year-old is out of contract at Bayern Munich in June 2026, and talks over an extension have so far failed to reach an agreement. The German champions could consider a sale this summer.

Valued at around £42m, Upamecano is a well-established figure in the Bundesliga and last season played a key role at the heart of Bayern’s defence. While Bayern are planning to partner him with Jonathan Tah, his contract situation remains unclear – something United hope to exploit.

With Leny Yoro emerging as a bright young talent, United want to pair him with an experienced centre-back. Lisandro Martinez’s injury record and Harry Maguire’s lack of favour with the club have left gaps to fill, and the arrival of Upamecano could provide the stability they need. The challenge will be convincing both the player and Bayern with a suitable offer.
