Authenticity (4.5/5): Reliability thy name is L'Equipe

Manchester United have been struggling offensively so far, with the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho not showing the form required for a top club.

The Red Devils are now looking forward to giving new boss Ruben Amorim the best squad possible as he begins his tenure. As such, L'Equipe have reported that United are interested in signing Chelsea's Nkunku, who has not been given a lot of minutes by Blues boss Enzo Maresca this season, and is considering an exit from Stamford Bridge in January.

L'Equipe is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to French players and French football in general, so reports can be considered highly reliable.

Value (3/5): Long-term contract but Chelsea ready to part

A transfer fee has not been mentioned in the report, however, as per Transfermarkt, Nkunku's value currently stands at €65 million (£54m). Additionally, Nkunku has a standing contract with Chelsea until 2029, and therefore, if Manchester United do intend to make a move, the Frenchman will not come cheap.

However, the L'Equipe report suggested Chelsea may be open to selling the 26-year-old as they have been struggling with their squad size and already have a number of wingers who are contending for additional playing time. As such, the transfer price may drop and United could snatch a bargain deal for Nkunku.

Suitability (3/5): Multi-profile forward but Amorim's plans may not suit

Nkunku is known to be a very versatile forward who has played in all the positions in the forward line, including both wings. However, the Frenchman has mainly been operating as a striker and an attacking midfielder for Chelsea since his move to the side last summer. Those positions are currently occupied in United's arsenal, with the right-wing being the only real vacancy at present.

Nkunku has not played as a right winger since 2022, so he may not be the perfect fit for Amorim's needs in the winter. Nonetheless, his versatility and ability to adjust may give him the edge over his competitors.

Upgrade? (2/5): Not a clear upgade on Man Utd's current options

Manchester United's forwards have been misfiring this season, as finding the back of the net has been a key cause of their inability to get results. However, since Erik ten Hag's departure, the forwards have been gaining form back and the same could be the result under Amorim as well. Having the likes of Hojlund, Rashford, Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes playing in the positions Nkunku occupies would make signing the Frenchman redundant. At least in theory

Logic (2.5/5): Considerable risk for both parties

Manchester United might be hoping for a quick reversal in their fortunes. However, over the last few seasons, Old Trafford has become a graveyard for talents to perish. As such, making the move away from an up-and-coming Chelsea for a shaky and in-transition United may not be the best career call for Nkunku. Similarly, for United, paying out a big signing fee for a player who has shown signs of being injury-prone may be a shot to their foot.

Whisper+ final verdict – 15 /25

In theory, Nkunku's potential move to Old Trafford may seem exciting, however, it is a move that should be kept on paper. With considerable risks and a high transfer fee, making a move for Nkunku seems redundant, especially when you already have those positions locked down by considerably talented players.
