Manchester United are preparing for another busy summer transfer window — particularly in midfield — with a new target emerging at Benfica.
With a major squad overhaul anticipated at Old Trafford, Richard Rios has emerged as one of United's midfield targets according to Spanish outlet AS. The Colombian international is seen as a potential candidate to help fill the void left by Casemiro's departure.
Rios on United's midfield shortlist
Several other major European clubs are also monitoring the situation, with Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli all credited with interest. Fulham are also named as a possible destination for the South American.
Signed by Benfica from Palmeiras at the start of the season for £23m, Rios initially struggled to settle in Portugal, alternating between the starting eleven and the bench in his early weeks under Jose Mourinho. He has since established himself as an important figure at the Lisbon club, making 36 appearances out of a possible 45 this season and contributing five goals and five assists.

Mourinho himself has been won over. ‘He is an instinctive player who brings excitement, and that shows in the excellent work he does in midfield — winning the ball back and driving us forward,' the former Chelsea boss said.
United plan midfield reinforcements
Despite a notable improvement under Michael Carrick and consolidation in the Champions League qualifying places, United are keen to push on — and strengthening the engine room is seen as essential. The primary driver is the departure of Casemiro, who is out of contract and seeking what is likely to be his final major deal, with Inter Miami and Saudi Arabian clubs the frontrunners. Manuel Ugarte, brought in from PSG as a potential solution, could also leave after failing to establish himself at Old Trafford.
At least two midfield positions will therefore need to be filled this summer. Alongside Rios, United are understood to be tracking Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest, Amadou Onana at Aston Villa and Mateus Fernandes at West Ham.
