Man United transfer news: Bruno Fernandes lays down terms to extend Old Trafford stay

Manchester United want to hold on to Bruno Fernandes. What is yet to be settled is whether the Portugal captain will want to stay, and on what terms. According to The Telegraph, the Old Trafford hierarchy have already made it crystal clear to the midfielder that he is a central piece in the club's plans.

But the 31-year-old midfielder wants more than just words: he is on the lookout for concrete guarantees over Manchester United's ambitions for the future before he takes any decision.

What Bruno Fernandes wants to see from Manchester United before deciding

A new deal is shaping up to be no simple matter. The Portuguese international's contract runs until the end of next season, with an option to extend for a further 12 months until June 2028. More importantly: there is a release clause of £55m (€65m) which is active until the first half of July this year. Should any club meet that fee and the player be willing to depart, Manchester United would have no way of keeping hold of their captain.

Fernandes has already publicly stated his desire to lift the Premier League and Champions League trophies. Sources close to the player revealed to The Telegraph that he is waiting for fresh signals indicating that Manchester United have a serious project in place to fight for those titles, not just promises. It is entirely possible that the captain is monitoring the way the transfer window unfolds before reaching a final verdict on his own future. The club, for their part, are banking on the planned overhaul of the midfield to convince Fernandes that the project is worth backing.

After investing in the attacking ranks last summer, the priority now is to rebuild the central area. Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni headline the shortlist of targets for the number six berth. Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba is also on the radar. Manchester United could look to land up to three reinforcements for the role, given the confirmed exit of Casemiro and the uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte, who never quite nailed down a place after his £50.5m switch from Paris Saint-Germain.

The club's reasoning is that a reshaped midfield, capable of providing support and raising the collective level, would be precisely the argument needed to convince Fernandes that Old Trafford remains the right place to chase the titles he so deeply craves.

Bruno on the brink of a Premier League record

While the future remains up in the air, Bruno Fernandes' present continues to impress. In Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Brentford on Monday, the Portuguese international laid on his 19th assist of the season. With four matches still to play in the league, he needs just two more assists to break the all-time Premier League record of 20 in a single campaign, currently held jointly by Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

About to turn 32 in September, Bruno remains a strong contender for the Premier League Player of the Year awards. Numbers that, however, make the situation even thornier for Manchester United: the more he shines, the more in demand he becomes. With Casemiro's departure and the uncertainty surrounding Marcus Rashford's future (Barcelona have yet to decide whether to trigger the £26m buy option for the Englishman), Fernandes is set to top the club's wage bill regardless of what happens.

The question is now whether he will be picking up that wage at Old Trafford or at a different address, building up the trophy-laden story he so deeply desires.
