Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (2/5): Questionable sources

With Trent Alexander-Arnold looking likely to leave Anfield in the summer, Liverpool are already looking for a replacement and believe they have found their man in Malo Gusto of Chelsea.

This comes from givemesport.com, whose credibility can often be questioned, though they have named Chelsea writer and podcast host Simon Phillips as their source.

Value (2/5): “Not for sale”

Losing an academy graduate for nothing and forking out for a replacement is not ideal by modern Premier League financial regulations, and given Chelsea seem adamant not to sell the Frenchman at any price, Liverpool will have to offer well over the £29 million valuation just to turn Chelsea heads.

Suitability (4.5/5):

Initially loaned back to his boyhood club Lyon, Gusto has now established himself as a Premier League quality right-back that Chelsea have taken time to nurture.

His and Chelsea's recent performances suggest he will have no issue swapping the back four of one title challenger to the back four of another.

Upgrade? (3/5): Little goal threat

With 12 Premier League appearances this season, Gusto has fought off the competition to avoid being shown the door at Stamford Bridge or be relegated to the UEFA Conference League squad, a testament to how highly he is rated by Enzo Maresca.

However, he has no goals and just one assist this season, and though he might be the better defender, Liverpool would miss having that goal threat and creativity without TAA.

Logic (2/5): No need to jump ship

Having established himself in the side, there seems little incentive for Gusto to switch to Anfield in the summer, with Chelsea on course to be back in the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool are said to still be hoping to keep hold of Trent, which would give them little need to go after Gusto.

Whisper+ verdict: 13.5/25

Gusto has a lot of the qualities Liverpool would be after, but even if Trent leaves, the Reds might be better served trying to sign a cheaper, more creative right-back.
