In England, the lion’s share of attention is on the Premier League but the Championship is one of the most watched leagues in the world despite being the second tier. Whether it’s the standard of football on show, the intrigue of who drops further from the top of the pyramid or the excitement of the chase for promotion to the biggest leagues in the world who knows. What we can do is bring you the latest betting odds covering all of these aspects.
Championship predictions: Our free tips to help you choose your bet
Here are our top three predictions for Championship games being played this week…
Leeds vs Burnley: Leeds to win @ 8/11 (1.73)
The Championship is paused for a little while now owing to the international break but it returns with a bang. Leeds vs Burnley is a gargantuan encounter as two of the bookmaker’s title tips go head to head. Had this game been played a couple of weeks back, we’d have fancied Burnley for a result but things change quickly in football and now we struggle to look past a home win. Leeds had started the campaign with a bit of a hangover from last seasons promotion heartbreak but they’ve kept three clean sheets on the spin now and won each of their last two games. Burnley meanwhile are on the opposite trajectory. Their life post-Vincent Kompany started superbly well but they’ve now failed to win any of their last three games notably losing twice in that run of games. On top of that, the h2h history is firmly with the hosts; they’ve not lost to the Clarets in eight years!
Plymouth vs Sunderland: Under 2.5 goals @ 11/10 (2.10)
We now turn our attention to the total goals market and we’re backing Plymouth and Sunderland to serve up fewer than three goals when they face off. At 11/10 (2.10) the value on offer is solid too. Plymouth have gone south of the 2.5 goal line in each of their last four matches whilst Sunderland have gone over 2.5 goals in just two of their most recent five outings. As for the head to head, two of the last three meetings have seen fewer than three goals.
Oxford vs Stoke: Oxford to win @ 2/1 (3.00)
We end our betting tips with Oxford vs Stoke and whilst this is a hard game to call with both sides in reasonable form we think the value exists on backing the hosts to take all three points. Oxford have won each of their last three home matches, which is every home game they’ve played this season, whilst Stoke have lost two of their last four games. On top of that, Stoke have a poor record at Oxford. Their last six visits have seen them draw two and lose four; admittedly, none of those meetings were that recent but it’s an interesting view nonetheless.
Championship Outright Odds
The new season is only a few games old but already the Championship title odds are forming a big focus for many punters. Going early is often the best way to find good value.
Burnley – Burnley became a bit of an unknown after losing their manager, Vincent Kompany, in the summer but, even allowing for their loss at Sunderland, they’ve made a strong start to the new campaign and, given their squad strength, it’s hard to believe they won’t be right in the mix come the end of the season.
Leeds –the Leeds play-off hangover might have received the perfect remedy over the past couple of weekends as they chalked up their first wins of the campaign. If they can build on those six points, you’d expect them to quickly surge towards the top of the league and, should they get there, they’ll remain in with a shout through the campaign.
Watford – It is important not to get too excited after a few games but Watford fans will be enjoying the start to the season they’ve had having won each of their three matches to sit second to a Sunderland side that look likely to lose their best player in the next day or so. If they can harness the early momentum then they could make a fist of things. The club know what it takes to get to the top flight after all.
Relegation Odds
Whilst the Championship can be the gateway to the Promised Land, it is also the league with the potential to chew you up and spit you into the third tier. Here are the teams we think are most in danger at this early stage:
Plymouth – Plymouth were never going to have a particularly relaxing season this year such is their budget and playing squad but things looked bleak after the opening game of the season. They’ve shown some recovery since though and had sat undefeated in three games (including one cup game) prior to their loss to Stoke. It will still be a long season for Plymouth fans but Wayne Rooney isn’t as down and out as he looked after the first 90 minutes of the campaign.
Oxford – the bookies odds have Oxford right in the relegation picture and back to back away defeats don’t make for good reading. The home form of the teams at the bottom could be huge this year though and it’s a case of so far, so good for Oxford at the Kassam. The big question is whether or not they can keep that going.
Cardiff – the Bluebirds have only earned one point from four games so far this season and, more worryingly, have scored just once and conceded 10. That gives them the worst attacking output and the worst defensive record. The season is young but those two things are never a good combination.
Top Goalscorer Odds
With some of last season’s best goalscorers having left – or being tipped to leave – the Championship, the 2024-25 golden boot wide open as far as we’re concerned. Here are leading names per bet365:
- Emmanuel Latte Lath, Middlesbrough @ 8/1 (10.00)
- Haji Wright, Coventry @ 9/1 (10.00)
- Mateo Fernandez, Leeds @ 10/1 (11.00)
- Josh Sargent, Norwich @ 12/1 (13.00)
- Kieffer Moore, Sheffield United @ 14/1 (15.00)

Different Bets Placed on the English Championship
There are three main markets for the English Championship. Read more about them below.
To Be Promoted
In this type of outright market, which is the most common one for this Championship, you place a bet on the team you think would get promoted to the Premier League. Considering that more than one team gets promoted to the top league almost every year, you should have better chances of winning this type of wager. But anything could happen in Football, and nothing is defined at the end.
Not to Be Promoted
With this type of wager, you have even more chances, because you are wagering on teams that won’t get promoted. This means that you have higher chances of winning, considering there are over twenty teams, and all of them, except a few, would win this type of wager. Of course, the odds here would be significantly lowered, so you might not get the best prices, which is understandable.
Relegation
This type of market is also prevalent among punters. It’s the opposite of the first market we explained. You wager on the team that would get demoted to a lower league once the English Championship ends. The odds that you get for this type of market are similar to those you get for the promotion of League One teams, but they can also be prices for teams who performed badly during the Championship.
Top Goalscorer during the English Championship
The name of the market speaks for itself. You are wagering who would be the player to score the most goals during the English Championship. It’s an outright market with a lot of popularity among punters.
English Championship Special Markets
Special markets are a fan-favorite category, and some bookies offer them even for English Championship. Unfortunately, most bookies don’t, so you would have to request them directly from the bookmaker. You can use the #PickYourPunt feature via Twitter and request the odds from Betfred. If they accept, they will tweet you back, and you can place your bet immediately.
The Top Prevalent Wagers Placed on the English Championship
English Championship matches are like any other football match. Bookies offer all the regular types of markets, such as:
- Match result – you bet on “home,” “away,” or “draw” result, and you necessarily predict who would win of the two available options.
- Both teams to score – you pick from “yes” and “no” bets whether you think both teams would score in the match or not.
- Double chance – with this type of bet, you combine two of your options, thus increasing your chances of winning.
- Over/under – here you wager whether the total score of the match would be over or under a certain amount of goals.
- Draw no bet – this bet removes the chance of a draw, and even if the match ends in one, you won’t lose anything no matter which team you wagered on.
- Handicaps – these bets give one team a virtual advantage, and for your bet to win, one team has to beat their rivals and overcome the advantage. Thee bets are quite popular when two unmatched teams are playing against each other.
- Outrights – in outright bets, you don’t choose the winner of a specific match, but the winner of the entire competition.
English Championship Offers and Promotions
Many bookmakers provide regular Football promotions to their customers and even offer related to a specific competition. The best way to benefit is to register to the bookmaker platform and receive their welcome offer. We’ve given you a list of the best bookies, so pick the welcome bonus you like most, and create an account. Other promotions you can benefit from as an existing customer, are different types of bonuses, like:
- Free wagers – you might be required to place a qualifying wager on a specific event or deposit a certain amount to your account to receive the promised free bets.
- Cash prizes – you can win cash amounts like free bets, either by depositing or betting a certain amount on a random or specific fixture.
- Enhanced prices – also called “odds boost,” “price boost,” etc. These types of promotions are given on specific matches, and they increase the odds of certain outcomes. That way, if you bet and win with the odds boost promotion, you will get a higher payout than without the promotion.
- Deposit bonuses – these types of bonuses are also called deposit matches, and they work by giving you a certain percent of your deposit as a bonus. Usually, these are for new customers, but sometimes they are offered to existing punters as well.
- Free-to-play games – some bookmakers offer daily free games where you are either asked trivia questions or have to spin a wheel. Playing these games, you have the chance to win other bonuses, like free bets, cash prizes, etc.
