Championship predictions: Our free tips to help you choose your bet

Here are our top three predictions for Championship games being played this week…

Tip1: Leeds vs Portsmouth: Leeds/Leeds @ 1/1 (2.00)

We kick off our Championship betting picks with a team that nearly found themselves in the Premier League, Leeds, versus a side that won promotion from League One, Portsmouth. We're expecting Leeds to harness their home support to give Portsmouth a tough welcome to the second tier as we tip Leeds to be leading at both half and full time. Leeds ended the 2023/24 campaign poorly – albeit they made the playoff final – but their home form was generally excellent as they lost just two games across the season notably winning 16; 11 of those 16 wins (69%) also saw Leeds leading at the interval.

Tip 2: Oxford vs Norwich: Over 2.5 goals @ 8/11 (1.73)

We again look at a newly promoted sides with Oxford hosting Norwich, who have spent a fair bit of time in the Premier League over the past few years. Oxford will look to attack the Championship and have already cited the Canaries' rivals Ipswich as an example to follow after last year. With that in mind, we're expecting a fairly open game here with chances at both ends likely; we're anticipating at least three goals. As for the stats that back that up, Oxford averaged 2.6 goals per game across their last five home games last season whilst Norwich averaged 2.8 in their last five away matches. On top of that, last time Norwich visited Oxford we saw six goals!

Tip 3: Luton vs Burnley: Luton to win @ 6/4 (2.50)

This match up sees two of last seasons relegated sides face off and we think the value on a home win is enormous at a price of 6/4 (2.50). Form wise, we can't read too much into the previous campaign but the Hatters will have home advantage here and also arrive into the new season with much more stability than their visitors, who have lost Vincent Kompany over the summer. Those two factors make Luton our pick to win with Burnley likely to be strong in the season but perhaps taking a few weeks to really find their groove.

In England, the lion's share of attention is on the Premier League but the Championship is one of the most watched leagues in the world despite being the second tier. Whether it's the standard of football on show, the intrigue of who drops further from the top of the pyramid or the excitement of the chase for promotion to the biggest leagues in the world who knows. What we can do is bring you the latest betting odds covering all of these aspects.

Championship Season 2023-24 Recap

The Championship season is fully concluded now and, boy, what a season it was. Leicester won the title but it was second placed Ipswich who were the story of the season as the Tractor Boys amassed a stunning 96 points to record back to back promotions under the guidance of the widely coveted Kieran McKenna. Ipswich's automatic promotion wasn't confirmed until the final day of the campaign though with Leeds pushing them all the way. The Whites picked themselves up from that disappointment to reach the playoff final but were beaten by Southampton ensuring an immediate return to the top flight for the Saints. Leeds meanwhile set a record for the most points accumulated in a second tier season without winning promotion.

At the other end of the table, Rotherham and Huddersfield both suffered relegation and were joined by a Birmingham side that were in the top six when their ownership made the wild choice to sack John Eustace and replace him with Wayne Rooney. It would be harsh to put the blame for the Blues' relegation at Rooney's door and Plymouth, who survived by just a point, clearly agree as they have since named the former Man United striker as their new boss.

As for the goalscoring charts only three players broke the mythical 20-goal mark. Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn topped the charts with his 27 goals crucial to their survival whilst Adam Armstrong (24) and Crysensio Summerville (20) also enjoyed fruitful seasons.

The next round of matches are upon us, and we've got Championship betting tips aplenty to choose from. Get your betslips ready and try your luck on these enticing clashes – full previews below.

Championship Outright Odds

The dust on the playoff final has only just settled but we now have a picture of next season's Championship and as such we know who are the early favourites for the 2024-25 Championship betting are. Our way too early thoughts are below:

Leeds – the beaten playoff finalists have obvious quality in their squad and in any other season they'd have won promotion with the points haul they earned. If they can dust themselves down and keep their squad together then you'd have to fancy their chances to push hard for the title.

Burnley – the Clarets tore the Championship up last time they were in the second tier and they didn't abandon their principles of play – maybe to their detriment in the Premier League last season – and that should stand them in good stead to bounce straight back up. Vincent Kompany, however, is likely to be managing elsewhere next year, which is a big factor that could influence their value.

Sander Berge of Burnley

Luton – the Hatters earned a lot of plaudits in the top flight last season after they gave the most battling display of the three relegated sides. Given how they went about their squad building last summer, they should be well equipped to compete at the top end of the Championship again.

Middlesbrough – a lot has been made of Middlesbrough finishing four points off the playoffs last season but they've got a talented manager in Michael Carrick and should they avoid a summer like last year – where they lost their star striker late in the window with no replacement – we expect them to be there or there abouts come May.

Relegation Odds

Whilst the Championship can be the gateway to the Promised Land, it is also the league with the potential to chew you up and spit you into the third tier. Here are the teams we think are most in danger at this early stage:

Oxford – Oxford shocked Bolton in the League One playoff final and, as such, their place as relegation favourites isn't a surprise. Their midfielder Cameron Brannagan has spoken of trying to replicate Ipswich but an immediate return to the third tier is far more likely.

Plymouth – Plymouth started last season well after topping League One the prior year but managerial changes soon followed leaving the Pilgrims in danger of the drop until the final day. Talk of Morgan Whittaker leaving and what many see as an uninspiring appointment in the dugout (Wayne Rooney) leaves them largely unfancied.

Derby – the Rams amassed 92 points to finish second in League One last season but were still expecting them to endure a tough season in the Championship. They've got young talent in their squad that could be picked off from elsewhere and they notably lack a goalscorer of a decent age.

Top Goalscorer Odds

We've already touched on the Championship top scorers of last season with only three hitting the 20-goal mark. With one of those now in the top flight it leaves the 2024-25 golden boot wide open as far as we're concerned. Here are a few names we expect to feature towards the top of the scoring charts:

  • Sammie Szmodics
  • Josh Sargent
  • Lyle Foster
  • Carlton Morris
  • Crysencio Summerville

Different Bets Placed on the English Championship

There are three main markets for the English Championship. Read more about them below.

To Be Promoted

In this type of outright market, which is the most common one for this Championship, you place a bet on the team you think would get promoted to the Premier League. Considering that more than one team gets promoted to the top league almost every year, you should have better chances of winning this type of wager. But anything could happen in Football, and nothing is defined at the end.

Not to Be Promoted

With this type of wager, you have even more chances, because you are wagering on teams that won't get promoted. This means that you have higher chances of winning, considering there are over twenty teams, and all of them, except a few, would win this type of wager. Of course, the odds here would be significantly lowered, so you might not get the best prices, which is understandable.

This type of market is also prevalent among punters. It's the opposite of the first market we explained. You wager on the team that would get demoted to a lower league once the English Championship ends. The odds that you get for this type of market are similar to those you get for the promotion of League One teams, but they can also be prices for teams who performed badly during the Championship.

Top Goalscorer during the English Championship

The name of the market speaks for itself. You are wagering who would be the player to score the most goals during the English Championship. It's an outright market with a lot of popularity among punters.

English Championship Special Markets

Special markets are a fan-favorite category, and some bookies offer them even for English Championship. Unfortunately, most bookies don't, so you would have to request them directly from the bookmaker. You can use the #PickYourPunt feature via Twitter and request the odds from Betfred. If they accept, they will tweet you back, and you can place your bet immediately.

The Top Prevalent Wagers Placed on the English Championship

English Championship matches are like any other football match. Bookies offer all the regular types of markets, such as:

  • Match result – you bet on “home,” “away,” or “draw” result, and you necessarily predict who would win of the two available options.
  • Both teams to score – you pick from “yes” and “no” bets whether you think both teams would score in the match or not.
  • Double chance – with this type of bet, you combine two of your options, thus increasing your chances of winning.
  • Over/under – here you wager whether the total score of the match would be over or under a certain amount of goals.
  • Draw no bet – this bet removes the chance of a draw, and even if the match ends in one, you won’t lose anything no matter which team you wagered on.
  • Handicaps – these bets give one team a virtual advantage, and for your bet to win, one team has to beat their rivals and overcome the advantage. Thee bets are quite popular when two unmatched teams are playing against each other.
  • Outrights – in outright bets, you don’t choose the winner of a specific match, but the winner of the entire competition.

English Championship Offers and Promotions

Many bookmakers provide regular Football promotions to their customers and even offer related to a specific competition. The best way to benefit is to register to the bookmaker platform and receive their welcome offer. We've given you a list of the best bookies, so pick the welcome bonus you like most, and create an account. Other promotions you can benefit from as an existing customer, are different types of bonuses, like:

  • Free wagers – you might be required to place a qualifying wager on a specific event or deposit a certain amount to your account to receive the promised free bets.
  • Cash prizes – you can win cash amounts like free bets, either by depositing or betting a certain amount on a random or specific fixture.
  • Enhanced prices – also called “odds boost,” “price boost,” etc. These types of promotions are given on specific matches, and they increase the odds of certain outcomes. That way, if you bet and win with the odds boost promotion, you will get a higher payout than without the promotion.
  • Deposit bonuses – these types of bonuses are also called deposit matches, and they work by giving you a certain percent of your deposit as a bonus. Usually, these are for new customers, but sometimes they are offered to existing punters as well.
  • Free-to-play games – some bookmakers offer daily free games where you are either asked trivia questions or have to spin a wheel. Playing these games, you have the chance to win other bonuses, like free bets, cash prizes, etc.
