Michael Carrick's reign as United's permanent manager has been a mixed one so far. While United have relied heavily on Bruno Fernandes during their uneven start, City's early success has once again been driven by Erling Haaland, who has found the net in two of his side's three league games this season.

That sets up an intriguing individual battle between Fernandes and Haaland, two of the Premier League's most decisive players who could have a major say in which side comes out on top at Old Trafford.

Both Fernandes and Haaland made 35 Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, although Fernandes played more minutes, featuring for 3,069 compared to Haaland's 2,960.

Haaland scored 27 goals to secure his third Golden Boot in four seasons, exactly three times Fernandes' total of nine. Fernandes, however, provided 21 assists compared to Haaland's eight and was also named the PFA Players' Player of the Year. Between them, the pair recorded exactly 65 direct goal involvements during the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The Norwegian attempted 126 shots, with 59 finding the target, giving him a shot-on-target percentage of 46.8%. Fernandes registered 85 attempts and 24 shots on target, producing a figure of 28.2%. From the penalty spot, Fernandes scored four times during the campaign, compared to three for Haaland.

Those numbers highlight the different roles the two players perform for their respective sides, with Haaland's output largely centred on finishing moves while Fernandes contributes more broadly through goals, assists and his involvement in build-up play.

This season, both players have scored three league goals apiece, although Haaland's third goal proved to be the winner against Coventry City, while all three of Fernandes' goals came against Ipswich on matchday two.
