Manchester United and Manchester City will renew their rivalry on Sunday, when the two clash at Old Trafford in matchweek four of the Premier League season.

City have made a perfect start to 2026-27, winning all three league games, as well as their opening Champions League match, with the club beating Porto 2-0 on Tuesday.

United also made a winning start to their Champions League campaign, emerging as 4-0 winners against Sabah on Thursday, though they have taken just four points from their first three top-flight outings.

If the hosts are to get the better of their visitors, they will need to come out on top in a number of areas, including in midfield.

That is easier said than done considering City spent in the region of £300m on their midfield in the summer of 2026, including more than £100m to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Anderson excels in a number of departments, though United have a midfield ace of their own, with Kobbie Mainoo a likely inclusion in the XI this season.

Here, FootballWhispers takes a look at the key battle between Mainoo and Anderson in midfield.

Kobbie Mainoo vs Elliot Anderson: Who will win this battle?

With only three league games played this season, the data from 2026-27 may not paint an accurate picture of Mainoo and Anderson, but the stats from 2025-26 are revealing.

Mainoo is a comfortable passer, evidenced by the fact he completed 89.2% of his passes last season, which was slightly more than his City counterpart at 85.5%.

However, Anderson outperformed him in every other category, both offensively and defensively.

The City star – when playing for Nottingham Forest – contested 542 duels to Mainoo's 186, while he also won 297 of those duels, significantly more than the United player (92).

Even accounting for the fact Anderson played more minutes (3,334 to 1,653), he still contested more duels per 90 (14.6 to 10.1) and won more per 90 (eight to five).

In the final third, Anderson proved to be more of a threat, scoring four goals and producing four assists compared to Mainoo's one goal and two assists.

It would be wrong to suggest that the two players are mismatched, especially as Mainoo is only 21, but he has a long way to go before he reaches the level of Anderson.

Anything can happen in a Manchester derby, but if both players are at their best, it is difficult to see how the City midfielder does not come out on top.
