Feyenoord’s visit to Stadion de Goffert presented arguably their toughest test of the season so far, and a 3-1 victory provided the perfect springboard for Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Barcelona, which, however, ended in a 5-1 drubbing at Camp Nou.

That was Feyenoord’s first defeat in 19 matches, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst watched his former side run riot against his current charges, who simply had no answer to their Spanish hosts.

Such a heavy defeat could easily trigger a downturn in form, so Van Bronckhorst will be eager for his side to put their European setback behind them as they look to cut the gap to current league leaders AZ Alkmaar to two points.

If history is any guide, De Stadionclub should be confident against their next opponents, having won each of the last 14 meetings in all competitions and scoring in 17 consecutive matches in this fixture.

Sunday’s trip to Zwolle concludes a run of three consecutive away games for Feyenoord, after which they face key home fixtures in both domestic and continental competition against Utrecht, AZ and Como.

Zwolle’s meeting with Feyenoord marks their fourth fixture against a top-five side from last season in just six gameweeks, following earlier clashes with Ajax, Twente, and NEC Nijmegen. As such, their shaky start is perhaps understandable given the level of opposition faced.

Henry van der Vegt’s side showed great character to rescue a 2-2 draw against Sparta and will need similar resolve against another Rotterdam opponent to avoid a defeat which could see them slip into the bottom three this weekend.

Since going five league games unbeaten in front of their fans between March 1 and May 5, De Blauwvingers have lost the subsequent three by a combined score of 7-1, and regaining their solidity on home turf is non-negotiable if Zwolle are to enjoy a positive campaign.

After netting 11 goals last season – including one against Feyenoord – Koen Kostons has been a bright spark for his side with three goals so far this term, and carries the hosts’ best hopes of springing an upset on Sunday.

Whispers predicts: PEC Zwolle 1-2 Feyenoord

Feyenoord were brought back down to earth in midweek, but we are backing them to respond with an away win this weekend at 11/25 (1.44).

Sunday’s opponents have managed just one clean sheet between them, so BTTS – Yes at 1/2 (1.50) looks a strong option.

The visitors have led at half-time in seven of their last eight meetings with Zwolle. A repeat at 5/6 (1.83) is an appealing selection.
