Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (3/5): Toon are bid admirers
Newcastle might finally land one of their long-term targets in January, as Fikayo Tomori is open to a move away from Milan, having played a lesser role for the Rossoneri this season.
Teamtalk.com are reporting this story and though they are sketchy on source information, Newcastle's previous interest in the player gives plenty of credibility.
Value (4/5): Price is right
Teamtalk.com claim Milan are open to offers around £25 million now that Tomori is not a regular starter. With a market value of £18.2 million and a contract expiring in 2027, that is a reasonable price tag for player who has still made nine league appearances this season.
If it fits within the PSR boundaries, then Newcastle would be wise to accept the price.
Suitability (4/5): Experienced, solid winner
A Serie A winner capped five times by England, centre-back Tomori will fit seamlessly into Eddie Howe's back four – the same defensive system used by Milan.
The Chelsea academy graduate also has limited Premier League experience and will bring solidity at the back to an inconsistent Magpies side.
Upgrade? (4.5/5): Newcastle need a lift at CB
Newcastle's back line has remained largely unchanged in the two seasons since their UEFA Champions League qualification, and the likes of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are two years older and two years slower.
Tomori turned 27 last week and could still have his best years ahead of him, from which Newcastle can greatly benefit as they look to challenge for Europe again.
Logic (4/5): Tomori wants to be playing
At 27, Tomori will be desperate to be playing at the top level every week and he has a better chance of doing that at St James' Park than the San Siro.
The Toon need to be wary when it comes to their finances, but it's not every day one of your prime targets becomes available for such a decent fee.
Whisper+ verdict: 19.5/25
Everything seems to be pointing towards Newcastle making a formal approach for Tomori. As long as they can convince him the North East is the best destination, this will be one to watch next month.
