Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2/5): Reputable outlet, low on details
Marcus Thuram claiming “San Siro is my home” has not prevented Liverpool from once again attempting to bring the French forward to a new home, Anfield.
That is the news today in Gazzetta dello Sport, the leading Italian sports newspaper, though they are quite low on the details as to where the source has come from and whether Liverpool want him in January or later.
Value (3/5): Release clause slightly above current value
Under contract until June 2028, Thuram currently has a £70 million release clause – about the going rate for a 27-year-old centre forward at one of Europe's biggest clubs, with eight goals and five assists in 15 appearances this season.
His current market valuation is €65 million (£54 million), so £70 million would seem reasonable for the Reds.
Suitability (4.5/5): Either Liverpool system suits him
Whether Arne Slot uses the 4-3-3 system or the 4-2-3-1 that he has brought to Anfield since his arrival, Thuram will be able to play his preferred centre forward role in both.
He could even operate on the left wing, where he played nearly 100 times before joining Inter. A lack of Premier League experience is the only question mark.
Upgrade? (2.5/5): Liverpool need a consistent scorer
This season is already looking likely to be Thuram's most prolific, where he has starting alongside Lautaro Martinez. It could, however, be little more than a purple patch for a striker who has never bagged more than 16 goals in all competitions in one season.
Liverpool's Darwin Nunez is similarly inconsistent, and Liverpool don't need to pay £70 million for more of the same.
Logic (2/5): Thuram seems settled in Milan
Challenging for a prestigious league title and the Champions League at a huge club is what Liverpool can offer, but Thuram already has those opportunities at the San Siro.
The Gazzetta article suggests the Italy-born Frenchman is happy in Milan, so there seems little reason to up sticks.
Whisper+ verdict: 15/25
Liverpool may have been tracking the Inter man before, but with their need to replace Mohamed Salah in 2025, £70 million could be better spent elsewhere. Their renewed interest seems questionable, which will be no bother to Thuram, who seems happy where he is.
