Authenticity (2/5): Nothing concrete so far

Tottenham are monitoring Milan centre-midfielder Tijjani Reijnders after some impressive performances in Serie A and in Europe this season, which have also caught the eye of Chelsea and Manchester City.

This news is coming from Italian transfer site calciomercato.com, who claim Spurs involvement is nothing more than “interest” at this stage.

Value (2.5/5): More than double what Milan paid?

A goal in a UEFA Champions League win against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu is always going to add a little extra to the price tag, and some are suggesting that Reijnders is now worth €50 million (£41.35 million), two-and-a-half times what Milan paid AZ Alkmaar for him in 2023.

With eight goals and assists combined last season, is the 26-year-old now reaching his peak, or are Spurs at risk of overpaying for a player enjoying a purple patch?

Suitability (4/5): Attacking and versatile

Mainly a centre-midfielder who can play in a more defensive or attacking role in the middle, or indeed fill in on either flank, Reijnders' versatility and ability to contribute in attack would be useful as part of the midfield three in Ange Postecoglou's setup.

He has never played in the Premier League, but his European and international experience suggests he can make the step up.

Upgrade? (3.5/5): Fresh threat through the middle

In the likes of Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevki, Spurs have plenty of creativity in their side, even if they don't show it week-in, week-out.

From the central areas, James Maddison has returned to form of late, but Reijnders could be considered an upgrade on Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur, with the latter's future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in doubt.

Logic (4/5): Worth putting in a bid

Unlike some of their rivals, Tottenham don't have glaringly obvious areas of the pitch to improve, and can probably justify bidding for Reijnders, given their inconsistency in attack – putting four past Man City either side of scoring once each against Ipswich and ten-man Fulham.

If Reijnders harbours ambitions of Premier League football, the time will feel right, given his rising stock.

Whisper+ verdict: 16/25

It is in the early stages, but this rumour could have some legs, as Reijnders could provide Spurs with that extra boost to take them into the top four. One to keep an eye on in January.
