As another Premier League season comes around, the excitement is building among fans around the world, with several clubs gearing up for another campaign in the English top flight.

Three clubs are waiting with anticipation to get their seasons off to a start after winning promotion from the Championship, and they are Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City.

All three will harbour hopes of replicating what Sunderland did in their first season back in the big time, with the Black Cats going on to qualify for European football, but the reality is that not every newly-promoted side can acclimatise to the division that quickly.

In addition, some Premier League regulars have had major shifts in personnel, which could affect them in the long run and make them potential relegation candidates.

Here, FootballWhispers looks at the relegation odds and predictions for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Hull City – 1/6

There is a valid reason why Hull City are favourites to go straight back down at the end of the season, and it points to their underlying data from their Championship campaign.

The Tigers won promotion through the playoffs, which in itself was a major achievement considering how poor they were defensively, conceding 66 goals and keeping only 11 clean sheets.

Additionally, Hull recorded the most ‘Both Teams to Score' successes at 30 of the three newly promoted teams, an indication of how many of their matches fall into absolute chaos.

Sergej Jakirovic’s men recorded an xGA (expected goals against) of 82.25, which was the second-highest in the division, but they miraculously conceded fewer than they were expected to.

However, with those types of numbers behind them, it will not shock many if they finished in the bottom three come May 2027.

Ipswich – 4/6

After spending just one season in the Championship, Ipswich are back in the first tier of English football, and they deserve their spot after finishing as runners-up last term.

However, a managerial reset is the concern for them, with Kieran McKenna stepping down at the end of last season and Gary O'Neil arriving to take over the hot seat.

A change of that magnitude usually brings uncertainty with it, but the hope for the Tractor Boys is O'Neil's experience in the Premier League, as he kept Bournemouth and Wolves' status intact in his first seasons with those clubs.

It is also worth noting that O'Neil has masterminded some praiseworthy results in the past, beating the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Ipswich's previous Premier League season saw them concede 82 goals and keep just two clean sheets (5%) across the 38-game campaign, which is an area that must be addressed if they are to remain in the division for another season.

While they are not automatic candidates to go down, all the underlying data points towards it being a long season for the Tractor Boys.

Coventry City – 5/6

Even as the champions of the division below the Premier League, the step up can be quite gigantic, which Coventry will hope they can deal with, especially with a manager who has experience with both playing and managing in the league.

The reality is that there is not much Premier League experience among the players, if any, which could be a problem for them in the long run.

Coventry were excellent last season, especially because they did not rely on a single goalscorer or a hot streak to land first place, but they were consistent performers, which is what they need this term.

Five different players reached double figures in the number of league goals scored last season, meaning they have several ways to hurt teams despite the jump in level.

The Sky Blues probably have the best chance from the three teams to survive the drop, but it will take some doing.

Sunderland – 7/2

While the Black Cats enjoyed an emphatic season, keeping those standards up could become a problem in the league this time around.

There is no doubt that Regis Le Bris has done a fantastic job with Sunderland, guiding them to a seventh-placed finish last season, above regulars like Everton, Brighton, Brentford, and even Chelsea.

It was their home record that held them in good stead throughout most parts of the campaign, as they had gone on a remarkable 12-match unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light.

This season, they must juggle their European commitments at the same time as their league duties, which is where they could fail, especially with a squad that is not large enough to compete on several fronts.

As a result, Sunderland are the next likely candidates to head down to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle – 10/1

The Magpies are the pick offering the most value in this list, because they are outsiders to go down, but that does not mean it cannot happen, if last season was anything to go by.

Wolves and West Ham were also regulars in the Premier League, with the latter even winning the Conference League in 2023, but the dreaded drop eventually found them.

Several crucial departures at Newcastle place them at risk of struggling this season, to the point of being involved in the battle for survival.

Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and club captain Bruno Guimaraes all departed the Toon in the summer, which leaves them with a huge rebuild from a player perspective.

To make matters worse, Eddie Howe vacated the head coach position as well, which means the Magpies brought in Matthias Jaissle from Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli to replace him.

The German has no experience in the Premier League and generally, and he will find it tough going managing the different personalities that usually come with a team as huge as Newcastle.

If he is still there come the end of the season, it will be miraculous, but then again, stranger things have happened in football.

FW Premier League relegation verdict

Considering the various factors surrounding each team, we predict Hull City and Ipswich to be almost certain to head back down to the Championship; however, Frank Lampard could pull a rabbit out of a hat with Coventry City.

There have been too many changes at Newcastle, who have lost several of their top players this season and last, and with an inexperienced manager at the helm, the Magpies look like they are in serious trouble.
