Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (1/5): Rodri made remarks in interview
At an awards ceremony in Madrid earlier this week, Man City midfielder Rodri responded, “I would take him with me without a doubt,” when asked about Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, as reported by Metro.
Unlikely to ever say something negative about his international colleague who scored in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, in front of the cameras or otherwise, we cannot exactly call this interest from City.
Value (4/5): Low release clause
Following his brother Inaki through the Athletic academy ranks and into the first team, Williams' role in Spain's Euro triumph made him one of the most sought-after left-wingers in the world.
Valued at around £58 million, he has a release clause of just £48 million, making him a very affordable option.
Suitability (4/5): Fits the Guardiola style
Just 22 years of age, he was unplayable at times in Germany, and has begun this campaign with seven goal involvements despite some ankle trouble.
Those performances suggest the Premier League shouldn't be beyond him, while the left side of a Pep Guardiola front three looks ready-made for him.
Upgrade? (4/5): Current City options not productive
Man City have struggled for positive results so far this season, with regular left-wingers Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish sometimes failing to make a positive impact. Doku is particularly inconsistent, with Grealish looking much happier in a free central role.
If Williams can be consistent, then he would have the ability to keep both of City's left-wingers out of the starting line-up.
Logic (2/5): Williams wants PL move
Williams has reportedly expressed interest in a move to the Premier League, and there would be much to be said for teaming up with his compatriots Rodri and Guardiola.
However, if City can get a more regular tune out of Doku and Grealish, they do not need another left winger, who is already said to be on high wages. By the looks of things, Chelsea and Arsenal are the frontrunners for now.
Whisper+ verdict: 15/25
Rodri seems like a trustworthy guy, but City do not do their transfer business based on who he praises in interviews. It seems unlikely that City will enter the race for Williams, though it would not be the worst move for the club or the winger.
