Authenticity (3.5/5): Former Manchester United scout makes big claim

Even though Brentford have slapped a massive price-tag on Bryan Mbeumo, as they are reluctant to sell their talisman in the summer transfer window, Newcastle United are ready to meet their asking price to secure a deal.

That is according to Football Insider‘s Mick Brown, who is “well-connected within the game” owing to his stints as a chief scout at Manchester United and Sunderland.

Value (3.5/5): Bees want £50m

Brentford are demanding £50m for Mbeumo, whose contract at the Gtech Community Stadium runs until the summer of 2026. Since the Cameroonian is Eddie Howe's top target for the right-wing position, it makes sense why the Saudi-backed Magpies are willing to spend big on him.

Suitability (4/5): Versatile forward

Even though the 25-year-old is capable of playing all across the frontline, including as a centre-forward, Newcastle see him as their next right-winger. His link-up play and decision making is impressive, underlined by the fact that he has 14 goals and three assists in the Premier League this term.

Upgrade? (3.5/5): Murphy to be benched

Jacob Murphy has been Howe's first-choice option at the right flank at St James' Park and has done relatively well this term, scoring four goals and eight assists in the league. However, it's fair to assume he would be benched for the potential big-money arrival.

Logic (2.5/5): Other options on the table

Apart from Newcastle, the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United have also shown interest in Mbeumo. The stature of both Premier League giants may influence the player's decision heading into the summer.

Whisper+ verdict: 17/25

Newcastle may have the money to convince Brentford, but question marks remain over their project's pulling power.
