Manchester United have identified a potential attacking reinforcement currently shining at the Africa Cup of Nations, with reports suggesting serious talks have already taken place. The Africa Cup of Nations may frustrate European clubs by taking their star players away mid-season, but the tournament also provides an excellent scouting opportunity for hidden gems. Manchester United appear to be taking full advantage, having reportedly set their sights on Mali forward Lassine Sinayoko (26).

The Auxerre attacker has caught the attention of scouts after scoring both of Mali's goals in the tournament so far, taking his international tally to six goals in 20 appearances. While Sinayoko typically operates as a productive winger with an eye for goal, Mali coach Tom Saintfiet has deployed him as a central striker following El Bilal Touré's demotion to the bench.

An Auxerre academy product who has never played for another club, Sinayoko enjoyed his breakthrough season in Ligue 1 last year, registering five goals and nine assists. This campaign, despite Auxerre's struggles in the relegation zone, he has already contributed six goals and two assists.

According to Africa Sport, serious negotiations have already taken place between Manchester United and the player's representatives. With Sinayoko's contract expiring in June and his market value sitting at around €7m (£6m), the Red Devils could wait to sign him as a free agent in the summer.

However, given Manchester United's resources and Auxerre's precarious league position, a January move for a nominal fee appears increasingly likely, providing Ruben Amorim with additional offensive depth ahead of the second half of the season.
