Manchester United are reportedly considering bringing David De Gea back to Old Trafford as doubts grow over Andre Onana’s status as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

When Onana arrived from Inter Milan in 2023, following a standout campaign in Serie A, many believed the Red Devils had finally found a long-term successor to David De Gea. However, after two seasons in the Premier League, the Cameroonian has failed to convince either the board or new manager Ruben Amorim.

Onana was dropped for United’s opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League season, a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, with Amorim opting to start Altay Bayindir instead. The Turkish goalkeeper, however, came under scrutiny after a questionable performance that included his role in the Gunners’ winner.

According to The Sun, United are now exploring the possibility of re-signing David De Gea, who remains a free agent after an impressive campaign in Serie A.

Could David De Gea return to Manchester United?

Despite receiving criticism during his final seasons at Old Trafford, De Gea remains a respected figure between the posts and demonstrated solid form with Fiorentina last season.

Now 34, De Gea is reportedly valued at €5m (£4.2m) and is under contract with La Viola until 2028. It remains to be seen whether he would consider a return to Manchester, having previously left the club following a turbulent final spell in which his performances often divided opinion.

De Gea made 545 appearances for Manchester United, making him one of the most-capped players in the club’s history.

The potential move would offer Amorim a trusted and experienced option as competition for Onana, who faces a crucial period in his United career.
