Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (4/5): Buy-back clause confirmed by multiple outlets
Manchester United received backlash for selling Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica for just £5m plus £2.5m in potential add-ons. However, they added a buy-back clause, which could be triggered in the upcoming January transfer window.
The latest report on the Spaniard's situation comes from the Manchester Evening News. Multiple outlets have already confirmed the Mancunians' interest in their former prodigy as well as a buy option in their favour.
Value (5/5): Bargain option for United to exercise
Fernandez has emerged as one of the best young full-backs in Europe this season under Bruno Lage at Benfica, leading to interest from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Despite intense hype and competition, United have the option to sign their academy product for around £16million.
Suitability (4/5): Defined role ready under Amorim
Under Erik ten Hag, Fernandez struggled to break through, with the Dutchman preferring the skill sets of other left-backs. However, Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 formation requires an attacking wing-back.
The 21-year-old is known for his creative instincts and ability to bomb forward – qualities that are key in Amorim's setup, as he wants his side to create from wide areas.
Upgrade? (3.5/5): Better than everyone bar Luke Shaw
Amorim has faced a headache when selecting a left wing-back for his lineup. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can act as covers but they thrive on the right flank. Tyrell Malacia is underwhelming going forward, to say the least.
Shaw is the only obvious better alternative than Fernandez, but the Englishman can't seem to catch a break when it comes to fitness.
Logic (4/5): Make a move before it is too late
The way Fernandez is playing at Benfica, more clubs are likely to circle. Further, United only have the option to re-sign him for the aforementioned figure until the summer of 2026.
As such, the Mancunians need to act decisively and bring back their former player to the Theatre of Dreams before other suitors pounce.
Whisper+ verdict: 20.5/25
Everything seems to be pointing towards United making a move for Fernandez. However, it remains to be seen what the Spain U21 international thinks about returning to the club who failed to place their trust in his talents earlier.
