Authenticity (4/5): Here we go…
Man Utd are set to swoop in and beat Arsenal to the signing of Diego Leon, a 17-year-old Paraguayan left-back, despite the Gunners closing in on his signature earlier this season.
This news comes from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, and once it appears on his X profile, the rumour instantly gets added credibility.
Value (3.5/5): Making an impression
Having broken into the Cerro Porteño first team this season, Leon has scored twice in 19 appearances for his boyhood club. The Paraguayan league is clearly not the strongest, but clearly he has made an impact that has impressed Premier League scouts, though he is yet to represent Paraguay at any level.
Romano claims the deal will be worth £3.14 million to United – small change for them, even if Leon is valued at under £1 million on Transfermarkt.
Suitability (2.5/5): A position United need to fix now
After many big signings, the purse strings are set to be tightened at Old Trafford, as they target cheap future prospects instead.
Leon plays a position United are desperate to fill, but they need an experienced left-back in right away, not a teenager with a handful of games under his belt in an average league by South American standards. Not 18 until April, regulations only allow for this deal to be made in the summer at the earliest.
Upgrade? (1/5): Not for now, at least
The clamour for his signature indicates that Leon has the potential to be a top full-back, but in 2025 he is highly likely to be ready to start for United, even ahead of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
That however, should not be enough to rubbish this rumour, given that he is not expected to get close to the first team for now.
Logic (3/5): A sensible approach
Scouring lesser-known leagues for rough diamonds is something that has served the likes of Brighton very well, as they have become accustomed to sitting above United in the table. Taking a leaf out of the Seagulls' book is not the worst idea for Man Utd.
Whisper+ verdict: 14/25
With the input from Romano, Leon's position and the apparent change of approach from United in the transfer market, this rumour could well be going places.
