On the verge of bringing back to Manchester United one of his former Sporting Lisbon players ahead of the winter transfer window, Ruben Amorim must face competition from… Manchester City!

The winter transfer window is certainly still far off, but clubs are already beginning to think about players who could arrive to strengthen the squad at mid-season. This is notably the case for Manchester United. After a difficult start to the season, the Red Devils have regained efficiency in the Premier League and are sixth. However, their midfield clearly lacks depth.

A situation that is more or less similar at Manchester City. Despite Tijjani Reijnders' arrival, the Citizens are searching for a midfield recruit, notably because Rodri has still not returned to his best level. According to information from Record, the two Manchester giants have planned to make an offer to Sporting Lisbon this winter to attract Morten Hjulmand, whom Amorim hopes to obtain at a “friendly price”.

Manchester derby for an £68.5m midfielder

Besides the two Manchester clubs, Tottenham also greatly appreciate Hjulmand's profile. In other words, the 26-year-old player has clearly caught the eye of Premier League heavyweights. Present at Sporting since 2023, the midfielder has established himself as one of this team's bosses. Already this summer, Manchester United had attempted to recruit him, in vain.

The Portuguese club are well aware of Hjulmand's talent and wish to keep him at least until the end of the season, whilst the Citizens and Red Devils are considering making an offer during the winter transfer window. The Denmark international (23 caps, one goal) possesses a release clause of £68.5m, but Sporting could be open to negotiation for a lower sum.
