Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain face each other in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, but the two clubs are also reportedly monitoring the same player away from the pitch.

Liverpool and PSG both eye Palmeiras teenager Bele

According to ESPN Brasil, Liverpool, PSG and Parma are all keeping a close eye on Erick Bele. The 19-year-old is an attacking midfielder who can also operate as a second striker or centre-forward. Despite his undeniable promise, the Brazilian has not yet made a single first-team appearance for Palmeiras in the league this season, with just three outings in the regional championship to his name.

Despite that limited exposure, the report claims that both Liverpool and PSG are prepared to offer £17m for his services in the next summer window. Palmeiras, however, are holding firm and demanding double that figure — £34m — for a player who is under contract until December 2029.

A credible Liverpool target?

The case for Liverpool is not straightforward. Paying £34m for a player who has yet to establish himself in the Brazilian first team would be a significant gamble — and recent history offers a cautionary tale. PSG's experiences with fellow Brazilians Lucas Beraldo (22) and Gabriel Moscardo (20) — neither of whom has lived up to expectations in Europe — serve as a reminder of the risks involved in signing unproven South American teenagers at a premium.

For Liverpool, the question is whether Bele represents a genuine long-term investment or an overcostly punt on potential. With Parma also in the running, the Reds may find that patience, and allowing a smaller club to take the initial risk, proves to be the wiser course of action, particularly given the hefty asking price relative to the player's current level of experience. The stage of the Champions League battle between Liverpool and PSG adds another layer of intrigue to any potential summer rivalry for his signature.
