Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (2.5/5): Top scout doesn't always hit

Crystal Palace are the new favourites to sign Ben Chilwell and offer him a route out of Chelsea.

This is according to former Premier League scout Mick Brown, speaking to footballinsider247.com. Brown is well-connected and Palace's interest is likely to be genuine, but that doesn't make this a done deal.

Value (4/5): Low fee likely

Unlike West Ham who wanted a loan, the Eagles are prepared to make Chilwell's move permanent.

He still has two-and-a-half years to go on his Stamford Bridge deal, but with him being frozen out by Enzo Maresca, the Blues are likely to let him go for less than his £16.75 million market valuation.

Suitability (2.5/5): Sharpness and formation issues

A mere 45 minutes of EFL Cup action is the extent of Chilwell's season so far, while injury reduced him to 21 appearances last season.

At 28, the England international should still be fit for Premier League football, but his lack of sharpness will be a concern if he signs for Palace. So too will Oliver Glasner's use of wing-backs, with Chilwell more accustomed to a back four.

Upgrade? (2.5/5): Behind Mitchell at first

Tyrick Mitchell has the left-back/left wing-back position nailed down at Selhurst Park, partly down to form and partly down to him being the only such player in the squad.

Palace therefore need back-up, and Chilwell will have to be content with a place on the bench at first, though that is better than what he's getting at Chelsea.

Logic (4.5/5): Makes sense for all

A cheap cover option is a no-nonsense move for Palace, while Chelsea will be happy to receive a fee and part company.

Chilwell clearly needs to be playing at least semi-regularly at his age, and Palace are offering the chance to do that in the Premier League.

Whisper+ verdict: 16/25

Players brought in as back-ups with a new formation to adapt to never score highly, but in the circumstances, this rumour makes good sense.
