  • Blues may look to sign the Frenchman in January
  • Barcelona unlikely to be open to selling the defender

Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (2.5/5): Not a renowned source for transfer news

Chelsea have reportedly renewed their interest in French defender Kounde as they look to bolster their defence after a strong start to life under Enzo Maresca. The Blues had been very close to signing Kounde in the summer of 2022, while the defender was still at Sevilla, before Barcelona swooped in late to steal the Frenchman away.

As per TBR Football, Chelsea are pondering a move for Kounde in the January transfer window as they have been impressed with his performances with the Catalan side and would like to give Maresca a versatile defender who can play as a centre-back and a right-back.

TBR Football are not known for the accuracy of their transfer stories and as such, there is not much concrete evidence to suggest that the Kounde report may be true.

Value (1.5/5): Staggering release clause

A potential transfer fee has not been mentioned in the report. As per Transfermarkt, Kounde is currently valued at €55 million (£46m) and has a running contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2027 with his release clause set at a staggering €1 billion (£840m). Additionally, Barcelona have no interest in selling the defender.

As such, it is unlikely that the Catalan side will agree to a January deal with any club for a potential fee of less than €100 million (£83.5m). Attaining such a massive fee without first making major sales is almost impossible for Chelsea as they know that the Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules may clash with such a massive signing.

Suitability (5/5): World-class all across the backline

It is reported that Chelsea plan to entice Kounde into making the move to Stamford Bridge by promising him a role as the primary centre-back, his natural role before being shifted to right-back by Barcelona.

The Frenchman has made a name for himself as one of the best right-backs in the world, however, he is still very adept at playing a central role in defence as he has done so multiple times last season for the Blaugrana amid their multiple injury crises.

Kounde would be the perfect ball-playing centre-back for Maresca as they have a lack of an elite ball player in defence to aid the defence's transitions into attack. Additionally, he can also cover for the ever-injured Reece James at right-back or for Marc Cucurella at left-back, where he plied his trade multiple times for Xavi Hernandez.

Upgrade? (5/5): One of the best defenders in the world

Chelsea by no means have a weak defence as they have defenders like Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile in their ranks, however, Kounde is simply levels above Chelsea's current options and he would be a direct starter over those three without a shade of doubt.

The Frenchman will also be a considerable upgrade at right-back over James, who has shown a lot of promise over the years at Chelsea but tends to spend more time in the recovery room than off the field.

Logic (2/5): Barcelona's project too enticing

It absolutely does not make any sense for Kounde to leave a starring role at an emerging Barcelona, who have shown loads of promise under Hansi Flick, for the project at Chelsea. While Maresca has had a decent start with the Blues, it is common knowledge that Chelsea are a highly turbulent club for any player and manager.

On the other hand, the move would make sense for Chelsea on a theoretical and tactical level, however, on paper, a big-money move in January would make no sense for the Blues, especially when they know they don't have much margin with the PSR guidelines.

Whisper+ final verdict – 16/25

Kounde's development at Barcelona has been exponential despite having been forced to star as a right-back. While he had complaints about not being utilised in his natural, those complaints have withered away over the last year as he is slowly starting to establish himself as one of the world's best in the position alongside the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As such, it would not make much sense for Kounde to throw it all away in search of playing time as a centre-back. Additionally, Chelsea would not be the right club to progress to, and only a move to the likes of Manchester City or Bayern Munich can be seen as logical for the Frenchman.
