Chelsea transfer news: PSG eliminate Blues from Champions League and cast doubt over Enzo Fernandez

On Tuesday evening, PSG confirmed their commanding first-leg victory — won 5-2 — by defeating Chelsea without much difficulty at Stamford Bridge, 3-0 on the night. After the match, Enzo Fernandez offered a far from reassuring update on his future at the club.

Fernandez opens the door to a Chelsea exit

Having eased through thanks to goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola to lead 2-0 inside 14 minutes — 7-2 on aggregate at that stage — Luis Enrique's Paris Saint-Germain left little doubt as to which side would be progressing in the Champions League.

The tie was as good as over for Liam Rosenior's men. Fernandez, who started in midfield wearing the captain's armband in Reece James' absence, was largely powerless throughout both legs of the tie.

After the elimination, the Argentine was asked about his future by ESPN Argentina. With the Chelsea captain being linked with a move to Paris this summer, his response did little to reassure supporters: “I don't know, there are eight games left and then the FA Cup. Then there's the World Cup, and then we'll see.”

Humiliated by PSG across both legs, Chelsea now face the prospect of losing one of their best players to genuine uncertainty over his future — despite his contract running until June 2032.

Fernandez's doubt — a gift for PSG

With this victory, PSG achieved two things at once: knocking Chelsea out of the Champions League, and planting seeds of doubt in Fernandez's mind. The midfielder has been identified by Luis Campos and the PSG recruitment team as a summer target. While Fernandez did not particularly shine across the two legs, his quality is not in question — he has contributed 12 goals and six assists in 45 appearances this season — and his impact in Paris could be significant.

Any transfer fee for Fernandez would, however, need to exceed the £106m Chelsea paid for him, according to TEAMtalk. When asked for his reaction by the media on Tuesday, Rosenior said he had not seen Fernandez's comments and stressed the need to focus on more important matters. The Argentine's future could nonetheless become one of the most pressing issues facing Chelsea and their manager very soon.
