Africa Cup of Nations, also known as AFCON, is Africa’s premier continental competition for national teams and the winners are crowned as champions of the continent.
While it may lack in quality compared to the European Championship or Copa America, AFCON is arguably the most exciting of all international competitions, with shocking results pretty much being the norm and favourites often slipping in the early stages.

AFCON is held every two years, although this has changed throughout history, along with the competition’s format. The next edition is scheduled to kick off in December 2025, in Morocco.
In this article, we will provide you with more information about the history of AFCON, along with the latest news regarding AFCON 2025.

AFCON 2025 favourites
Despite the Ivory Coast being the reigning champions, the main candidate to win AFCON 2025 are the hosts, Morocco. After all, they will have the home-court advantage and they recently became the first team from Africa to ever reach a World Cup semi-final, at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
That being said, Morocco disappointed at AFCON 2023, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by South Africa.
After Morocco, the bookies see Algeria as one of the top favourites, along with Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria, and the reigning champions Ivory Coast.
