Wolves vs Chelsea last five H2Hs: Why a draw is the most likely result

Wolves take on Chelsea on Sunday 24 December in what will be the Premier League's first Christmas Eve match in over 20 years. The travelling Chelsea supporters may be disgruntled about having to make a two-hour journey up north on Christmas Eve so there will be extra pressure on Mauricio Pochettino's men to deliver the three points.

Unfortunately for them, the Wolves vs Chelsea last five H2Hs suggest that the Blues could be in for a tough afternoon at a ground they haven't won at since 2019.

Wolves vs Chelsea H2H record

The Wolves vs Chelsea rivalry isn't one that is necessarily talked about a lot in English football but it is one that has produced many fascinating matches over the years. In total, they have played each other 115 times and Wolves don't have anywhere near as bad a record against the Blues as you might expect.

  • Wolves Wins: 41
  • Draws: 30
  • Chelsea Wins: 44

The first-ever Wolves vs Chelsea H2H came in 1906 in the old Division Two. Chelsea recorded an away victory on that occasion but their overall record away at Wolves isn't great – They have won just once in their last five visits to Molineux.

Wolves vs Chelsea last five H2Hs

Chelsea 0-0 Wolves – 27th January 2021

Chelsea played Wolves at Stamford Bridge in January 2021 at the height of the COVID pandemic. No fans were in the stadium but they didn't miss out on anything in what turned out to be a drab 0-0 affair in the capital. The match marked Thomas Tuchel's first job in charge after Chelsea after he replaced Frank Lampard as manager midway through the season.

Wolves 0-0 Chelsea – 19th December 2021

Wolves and Chelsea played out back-to-back 0-0 draw when they met at Molineux in December 2021. Before the match, Chelsea had requested that it be postponed as their squad was suffering from a Covid outbreak but the request was denied. As a result, a depleted Blues squad battled away and were happy enough with their point in a match that Wolves had good chances to win.

Chelsea 2-2 Wolves – 7th May 2022

One of the more exciting Chelsea vs Wolves came in May 2022 in what turned out to be the final match of the Roman Abramovich era. Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a double from Romelu Lukaku and the game looked done and dusted. Then, Trincao made things interesting with a goal for the visitors in the 80th minute before captain, Conor Coady, nodded home the equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Chelsea 3-0 Wolves – 8th October 2022

Chelsea recorded their first win over Wolves in two and a half years in October 2022. Wolves came into the match without a permanent manager after the departure of Bruno Lage and they were as disorganised as you might expect. On the day, Chelsea's three goals came from Havertz, Pulisic and Broja in a win that marked Graham Potter's first victory at Stamford Bridge as the Blues' manager.

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea – 8th April 2023

The most recent Wolves vs Chelsea H2H came in April 2023 with both clubs' seasons effectively over. Wolves had navigated their way away from the drop zone while Chelsea were in freefall and had turned to Frank Lampard as Interim manager to merely see them through to the end of the season. Wolves got the win via a goal from Matheus Nunes in what was his final goal for the club before his summer move to Manchester City.

Potential MVP – Pedro Neto

Gary O'Neil was in a chipper mood this week and the reason for that is the return of Pedro Neto. The Portuguese winger has been missing from action for two months after pulling his hamstring against Newcastle but he has trained with the Wolves squad all week and is in line for a start on Christmas Eve.

Wolves' form has dipped without Neto and it's clear to see why. He is their main attacking threat and despite missing two months of action he is still the Premier League's highest assist maker with seven assists to his name this season. Neto has form against Chelsea, too, netting a late winner in Wolves' 2-1 win over the Blues in December 2020.

Key trend

Looking at the Wolves vs Chelsea last five H2Hs, this is a fixture where draws are commonplace. Wolves have been a difficult team to play against in recent years but they play a slightly more open style now under Gary O'Neil which could mean there is more chance of a winner on Sunday. Despite that, we're going for another draw here in a result that would likely be accepted by both manager.
