West Ham transfer news: Hammers make ‘not for sale’ stance clear after Brentford bid for £22m defender

West Ham have reportedly rejected an approach from Brentford for defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, and making it clear that the Senegal international is not for sale this summer.

The Bees are understood to have submitted an opening offer for the 21-year-old left-back as they look to strengthen their defensive options following injury concerns over Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey. 

However, the bid was immediately turned down, with West Ham insisting Diouf remains a key part of Nuno Espirito Santo's plans for the 2026-27 Championship campaign.

Diouf only arrived from Slavia Prague last summer in a deal worth around £22 million and quickly established himself as one of West Ham's standout performers despite the club's relegation from the Premier League. His impressive debut season also attracted interest from Manchester United earlier this year, but no move materialised.

West Ham transfer news: Why the Hammers are refusing to sell Diouf

West Ham's position has been strengthened by significant transfer income already generated this summer.

The sales of Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville have reportedly brought in around £153 million, easing any financial pressure to cash in on one of the club's most promising young players. 

As a result, the Hammers are under no obligation to entertain offers for Diouf unless an exceptional bid arrives.

The Senegal international made 32 Premier League appearances during his first season in England, contributing five assists while showcasing his athleticism and attacking quality from left-back. 

He also featured for Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further enhancing his reputation on the international stage.

With Jarrod Bowen also committing his future to the club, the Hammers are determined to retain the core of a squad capable of challenging for an immediate return to the Premier League.

West Ham transfer news: Will Brentford return with another offer?

Brentford's interest is understandable given their need for greater depth at left-back, but reports suggest their opening proposal fell well below the figure that would tempt West Ham into negotiations.

It remains to be seen whether the Bees will test the Hammers' resolve with an improved bid, although West Ham's current stance leaves little room for optimism from Brentford's perspective.

Unless the London club receive an offer that dramatically exceeds their valuation, Diouf is expected to remain at the London Stadium as one of the cornerstones of Nuno's promotion project.

FW verdict: Keeping Diouf is the right decision

West Ham have made several difficult decisions since their relegation, but refusing to sell El Hadji Malick Diouf is one that makes complete sense.

At just 21, Diouf has already shown he can compete at Premier League level and still has significant room to develop. Having generated substantial funds through other departures, there is no sporting or financial need to sacrifice one of the club's most valuable assets.

If West Ham are serious about securing an immediate return to the top flight, retaining players of Diouf's quality should be viewed as a necessity rather than a luxury.
