Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2.5/5): Mendez tipped to save Lopetegui's job
Despite overseeing a tricky win at Southampton on Boxing Day, West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui remains one of the likelier candidates to be the next manager sacked.
It has been suggested that signing Brais Mendez from Real Sociedad is one way to improve his side's fortunes. The suggestion comes from CaughtOffside, who do not give any source information.
Value (3/5): Hammers have to take a gamble
It is added that Sociedad value their superstar at £49.8million. The 27-year-old is one of the best creative midfielders in Spain and has six-goal involvement across all competitions this season.
If he can arrive in London and replicate his form in the Premier League, West Ham would worry little about that figure. However, it remains a big ‘if', especially with other West Ham transfer targets currently being mooted.
Suitability (3.5/5): Versatile option
With great passing range and technical ability, the Sociedad star is capable of playing all across the middle of the park.
Accordingly, he could slot in Lopetegui's 4-1-4-1 in different positions. However, he is at his best as the attacking midfielder, and should be given the freedom to make a difference higher up the field.
Upgrade? (4/5): Better than Carlos Soler
Mendez could come in as a direct replacement for Soler, who has just one assist to his name in 14 Premier League appearances this season, despite playing just behind striker Niclas Fullkrug.
The former is much better than his fellow countryman when it comes to unlocking the opposition defence with quick passes and movement.
Logic (2/5): Hammers may want to wait for a better option
The Spanish midfielder regularly makes headlines with his exploits in LaLiga, and if he continues to exceed expectations at La Real, sooner rather than later, bigger clubs with brighter short-term futures may knock on his doors.
Whisper+ verdict: 15/25
This rumour does well to address what Lopetegui needs, but there's little in it for West Ham fans to get excited as far as the transfer saga is concerned. Furthermore, there's competition from Aston Villa – and the lure of Champions League football – for Mendez's signature.
