Tottenham Hotspur are not well-known for their lavish spending and are usually looking for bargains that can improve the squad, which is reflected in this list.
Spurs' record signing set them back £63 million and will go down as one of the biggest flops in the club's history when all factors are taken into account.
As the transfer window heats up and Tottenham continue to be linked with several players, we're going to analyse their top five most expensive signings of all time and how they've performed for Spurs.
Tottenham most expensive signings: The top 5

🇫🇷 Tanguy Ndombele | Lyon | £63m | 91 (10) | N/A |
🇧🇷 Richarlison | Everton | £60m | 66 (15) | N/A |
🏴 Brennan Johnson | Nottingham Forest | £47.5m | 34 (5) | N/A |

Tanguy Ndombele – £63m
After paying less than 100 games for Lyon, Spurs saw fit to splash a club-record fee on Tanguy Ndombele. The French midfielder was seen as the man to drive forward their midfield after losing the likes of Moussa Dembele and Christian Eriksen over the years.
However, it turned out to be a horrendous piece of business. Ndombele simply couldn't stay fit, at a good weight or injury-free which saw him start just 46 league games and return just 11 goal involvements.
The French midfielder had countless managers to play under as well as several loan spells to regain form and fitness but simply never looked up to the intensity of the Premier League and was finally let go by mutual consent this summer.
Richarlison – £60m
Richarlison had spent four seasons with Everton and constantly fighting against relegation was not his ideal scenario. So, when Spurs shelled out £60 million for the striker who'd hit double figures in three of his four campaigns at Goodison Park, he jumped at the chance.
The Brazilian striker managed 11 goals in 28 appearances for Tottenham in the Premier League, which isn't a great return on the club's investment. With links rife around a new striker arriving in North London, Richarlison is being tipped to move to Saudi Arabia.
It would be a short but sweet time with Tottenham if Richarlison was to jet off to the Middle East, but Daniel Levy will be demanding a profit on the £60 million they paid just over 12 months ago.
Brennan Johnson – £47.5m
A rather surprising move last summer for Spurs was that of Brennan Johnson after just one season in the Premier League. Despite strong competition in Spurs' attacking front three, Johnson was afforded 23 league starts.
Johnson only got five goals in the league, however, with a bit more coaching he could turn into a star winger having finished last campaign with an XG of 10.3. So, Johnson must step up in the final third and score more goals, especially if he wants to justify his price tag.
Cristian Romero – £42m
This is probably the best value for money signing on this list with Cristian Romero now a World Cup and Copa America winner and being linked with Real Madrid. Despite his sometimes rash nature with 26 yellow and two red cards in the league, Romero is now vice-captain and a standout defender in England.
At just £42 million, Romero appears to have been a brilliant piece of business and if he does end up leaving in the near future, Levy and Spurs will be set to make a very tidy profit.
Davinson Sanchez – £42m
While Davinson Sanchez's time at Spurs didn't end well having been shipped off to Turkey for just £12 million, the Colombian defender was a solid signing for Spurs.
Sanchez played over 200 times for Tottenham but following the arrival of Romero, it looked as though Sanchez's time was up and that turned out to be true with a few errors not helping his reputation.
The Colombian was signed when just 21 years of age, so was perhaps thrust into the spotlight a bit too soon, but can certainly hold his head up high for what he did in England.
