Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (4/5): Sky Sports reporter makes big claim

Manchester United are keeping an eye on Mathys Tel and could enter the race to sign him should they sell one of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford before the transfer deadline day.

The young French forward wants to leave Bayern Munich with immediate effect.

The story comes from Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, who is one of the best in the business.

Value (3/5): Competition could increase fee

Following Tel's request, the Bavarians and his representatives are open to accessing all options, including a permanent sale. However, a loan exit appears the most likely outcome for the forward, who is worth £25 million according to Transfermarkt.

Yet, with Chelsea also in the race, United might find themselves paying a significant loan fee to win the battle for the 19-year-old.

Suitability (2/5): Potential mis-match

The French forward, who operates as a centre-forward as well as left-winger, has a very direct style of play, as he likes to take on defenders and make use of his ferocious ball-striking ability to rattle the opposition's net.

However, Ruben Amorim's setup is more suited to wide playmakers, capable of retaining possession and linking up with teammates through swift and short passes in the final third. Tel doesn't appear to be an ideal fit for the system.

Upgrade? (2.5/5): Garnacho or Rashford's replacement

Tel's profile is similar to that of Garnacho and Rashford and it is underlined that United's aim is to sign him only if they let one of the pair leave.

On paper, he appears to be a like-to-like replacement. However, since both Garnacho and Rashford have struggled under Amorim due to being more direct wingers by nature, it's tough to see Tel making any positive difference either.

Logic (2/5): Move to France

Tel's biggest concern is lack of minutes in Munich. As such, moving to sides like Chelsea or United is unlikely to do him any favours. With Marseille also keen on signing him, it would be best for him to return to France to continue his development.

Whisper+ verdict: 13.5/25

United are yet to join the race for Tel and considering how difficult it is proving for them to offload Garnacho and Rashford, they are unlikely to make any serious move for the Bayern wonderkid.
