Sunderland to edge it
We've already touched on the fact that the form of these teams is extremely tight across recent weeks but, despite that, we're predicting Sunderland to win. In general form terms, both sides have won one, drawn two and lost one of their last five games whilst the head to head record across the last five meetings is very even too. The reason we lean towards a Sunderland win rather than a draw comes in the respective home and away form; Reading have lost each of their last three away games and, longer term, they've lost seven of 10 with just one win in that period.
Goals at both ends
Our next prediction for this game sees us backing both teams to score. Sunderland have seen each of their last three games feature goals at both ends, as have four of their last five outings. For Reading, it's a not too dissimilar service with three of their last four games ending with both teams scoring goals. Three of the last four head to head games have seen both teams score too.

So, that gives you some insight to how the different bookmakers see the action unfolding. How though do the bookies odds translate into probabilities ahead of this game and how might that impact your view of our predictions? Let's find out.
Sunderland odds: 12/13 (1.92) – 52%
Draw odds: 12/5 (3.40) – 29%
Reading odds: 3/1 (4.00) – 25%
Sunderland arrive into this game as big favourites to take the win. Given some of their recent results and their injury list though, there will be plenty of punters who are attracted to the bigger priced draw and away win markets. The total goals and both teams to score markets will attract a fair bit of money too in our opinion. With only two real outcomes for each – if focussing on 2.5 total goals – don't have masses between them as far as odds go; that leaves opportunity for bettors to exploit.

Sunderland
Sunderland arrive into this game with a few names on their injury list. Amongst them are Corry Evans, Lynden Gooch and most importantly Ross Stewart. With Stewart sidelined, the Black Cats really need to find a way of getting amongst the goals. That will either be achieved through an individual stepping up or a change in system to something a tad more attack minded.
Predicted lineup – Patterson, Alese, Batth, Ballard, Hume, Neil, Michut, Clarke, Diallo, Roberts, Gelhardt
Reading
Reading have been in a rather poor run of form recently but they showed tremendous character to come back from 2-0 down in their last game against Watford. They will want to avoid having to fight back in this game but those qualities they showed are useful during any game of football. As for the team selection itself. we can see an unchanged XI coming in.
Predicted lineup – Lumley, Mbengue, Holmes, McIntyre, Yiadom, Loum, Hendrick, Casadel, Hoilett, Ince, Long

Player to watch
Sunderland losing Ross Stewart to a long term injury is a real bitter blow for their playoff hopes. That being said, their January addition Joe Gelhardt, who joined on loan from Leeds, is a player that is widely regarded as an exciting talent. With a couple of Premier League goals under his belt already, it will be interesting to see how he measures up in the Championship.
