Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (3.5/5): Pogba continues to be linked with Marseille
Paul Pogba has set his sights on joining Olympique de Marseille and is willing to take a wage cut in order to play under Roberto De Zerbi. Marseille director of Football Mehdi Benatia has already confirmed the Ligue 1 giants considered the possibility of signing the player in the winter window.
The story comes from RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, who adds that his potential arrival was approved by De Zerbi during the recently concluded window.
Value (3.5/5): Banking on his past showings
Pogba has not played professional football since September of 2023. As such, Marseille would be taking a risk if they hand him an opportunity to join their project as the Frenchman would need plenty of time before he rediscovers his rhythm. However, considering his past exploits, a free transfer with reasonable wages could be appealing for the French outfit.
Suitability (4/5): All-action midfielder
The World Cup winning midfielder has previously shown he is capable of doing anything with the ball at his feet. At his peak, his ball carrying ability and passing range was second to none. As such, Marseille, who play a possession based football under De Zerbi, may benefit from his arrival.
Upgrade? (3.5/5): Top squad option
Marseille have the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Valentin Rongier in their midfield. Considering Pogba's long absence from the game, it would be tough to compare him with any of these names but once he is fully fit, he could be a top squad option and challenge these midfielders for a starting spot.
Logic (3.5/5): European football in sight
Pogba has mostly been linked with moves to MLS or Saudi Arabia due to his age and absence, owing to a doping ban. At this stage, Marseille appear to be the only top European club showing interest in the player, who seems to be determined to stay in Europe and is even willing to accept a less lucrative deal.
Whisper+ verdict: 18/25
Pogba will be able to resume playing in March but the report suggests any Marseille move is only going to take place in the summer.
