Chelsea vs Newcastle last five H2Hs: Is another low-scoring affair on the horizon?

Chelsea are set to take on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Monday night with Mauricio Pochettino's job under serious scrutiny after a disappointing first season as Chelsea boss. The two teams are separated by four points so a win for Chelsea would move them to within a point of the Magpies and closer to the European place.

The match is also a big one for Newcastle as they will still believe they have an outside of chance finishing inside the top six. With both clubs chasing European football, who are the most likely to come out on top? The Chelsea vs Newcastle last five H2Hs suggest that this one could go either way, a feeling that is shared by many coming into the match.

Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle – March 13 2022

This was a much closer encounter, with Newcastle feeling they should have had a penalty for a pull on Jacob Murphy. That occurred shortly before eventual game-winner Kai Havertz elbowed defender Dan Burn, but was allowed to remain on the pitch. Havertz used that let-off to spur him on and net an 89th-minute winner.

Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea – November 12 2022

Newcastle edged out a feisty affair in last season's corresponding fixture via a Joe Willock effort from outside the 18-yard box, which sent tempers flying. The win put Newcastle in the top three of the Premier League at Christmas for the first time since 2001, and piled more pressure on then-new Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle – May 28 2023

This was the final game of last season and neither team had anything to play for, with Chelsea well and truly out of any meaningful race and Newcastle had already confirmed their spot inside the top four. This meant there were plenty of changes from both teams and that resulted in a rather uninspiring 1-1 draw. Anthony Gordon's maiden Newcastle goal put the Magpies ahead, before a Kieran Trippier own goal before the half-hour mark levelled things up.

Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea – November 25 2023

Chelsea conceded four goals to Newcastle for the first time since 1994 earlier this season when Newcastle ran riot at St James' Park. Neither side has gotten off to the best of starts in the league but Eddie Howe's team put in a stunning display to overcome a lacklustre Chelsea. Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon all scored for the home side while Raheem Sterling netted for Chelsea.

Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle – December 19 2023

Newcastle enjoyed a night to forget at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup in December. The Magpies, who had beaten Man City and Man Utd to reach the quarter-finals were seconds away from qualifying for the semi-finals when Kieran Trippier's backpass was intercepted by Mykhailo Mudryk who then scored to send the match to a penalty shootout. Trippier's woes worsened in the shootout when he missed his spot kick to help the home side into the semis.

Potential MVP: Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak has had to endure a stop/start second season at St James' Park much to the frustration of the player, his manager and Newcastle supporters. Despite that, the Swedish strike has still managed to score 15 goals in all competitions and is averaging a goal every 129 minutes. He scored against Chelsea earlier in the season and he will be looking forward to facing them again.

Key trend

Looking at the Chelsea vs Newcastle last five H2Hs, this fixture isn't usually one that produces many goals. Aside from the 4-1 earlier this season, their last four fixtures have all seen fewer than three goals scored. If you want to back the same to happen again on Monday night then consider the under 2.5 goals market at 33/20.
