Whisper+ analysis
- Newcastle United are considering Nico Schlotterbeck as a transfer target.
- The Magpies are looking for defensive reinforcements.
- Borussia Dortmund want to keep the centre-back.
Authenticity (2/5): Newcastle identify Schlotterbeck as summer target
It was recently reported that Newcastle are leading the race to sign Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, the Magpies are also considering Dortmund's Schlotterbeck as an option for the summer transfer window. The report claims that Newcastle view the Germany international as a top target.
Value (3/5): Dortmund reluctant to sell
Dortmund are believed to be keen to retain Schlotterbeck's services beyond the end of the season. As a result, it would take a significant player to convince them to part ways with a player who is under contract until the summer of 2027.
Suitability (3.5/5): Injury concern
Schlotterbeck has established himself as a key player for Dortmund during his three-season stay at Signal Iduna Park. The 25-year-old is the perfect example of a ball-playing centre-back, demonstrated by the fact he is in the Bundesliga top five for passes into the final third this season, as per FBref.
However, Schlotterbeck's season was cut short earlier this month after it was revealed he had suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee. As a result, he could be out of action until October.
Newcastle are still keen to secure his signature, but there is some concern about how long it will take for Schlotterbeck to get up to speed once he returns to action later this year.
Upgrade? (3.5/5): Time for refresh
Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have largely been used as Eddie Howe's central defensive pairing this season, but the Magpies may be wary that they need to refresh their centre-back options with Burn and Schar both in their 30s.
Sven Botman may feel like a new option, having missed a significant portion of the season through injury. Schlotterbeck would also be a valuable addition, especially as his Champions League experience could be useful if Newcastle finish in the top five.
Logic (3.5/5): Premier League challenge
Having played for Union Berlin, Freiburg and Dortmund, Schlotterbeck could be open to playing his club football outside of Germany for the first time in his career.
While he could entertain a Premier League move, his attitude towards a move to St James' Park could depend on whether Newcastle can secure Champions League qualification.
Whisper+ verdict: 15.5/25
Schlotterbeck would be a shrewd signing for Newcastle, but they may have their work cut out to prise him away from Dortmund.
