Manchester United are reportedly finalising the signing of Senne Lammens from Belgian side Antwerp, raising questions about the future of the club’s other goalkeepers. British media have suggested a potential loan move for André Onana to West Ham, but Fabrizio Romano has firmly dismissed those rumours.

Premier League’s goalkeeping shuffle

There has been significant turnover in the goalkeeping ranks this summer, with nine of the 20 Premier League clubs expected to start the season with a new number one. Manchester United are set to join this group as they close in on a deal for Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

The 23-year-old is expected to arrive for around €20m (approximately £17m). While not yet a household name, he reportedly has high ambitions and intends to challenge for the starting role at Old Trafford. Given recent performances from both André Onana and Altay Bayindir, the path to the number one spot might not be as steep as it seems. The club are also unlikely to spend such a sum on a player they see merely as a backup.

Onana linked with West Ham

Naturally, attention has turned to what this means for André Onana. Despite a difficult season and a mixed reception from Manchester United fans, the Cameroonian still has admirers, particularly due to his past success with Ajax and Inter Milan.

Some reports in the British press claimed West Ham were interested in taking Onana on loan. The Hammers have undergone their own goalkeeper changes this summer. Alphonse Areola had a disappointing campaign, Łukasz Fabiański has retired, and the club brought in Mads Hermansen from Leicester.

However, Hermansen struggled in his debut against Sunderland and was partially at fault for at least two of Chelsea’s goals in a heavy 5-1 defeat. Onana’s arrival could therefore make sense, especially if Areola is sold. But according to Fabrizio Romano, such a move is not on the cards.

Fabrizio Romano denies rumours

“My sources deny the speculation that André Onana could leave Manchester United on loan to join West Ham. There are currently no negotiations taking place. The potential arrival of Senne Lammens, which is still not official, does not mean that Onana will leave United this summer,” Fabrizio Romano posted.
