Man Utd vs Aston Villa last five H2Hs: Can history save United?

Man Utd will take on Aston Villa on 26 December as the pressure continues to mount on Erik Ten Hag. The Reds lost to West Ham on Saturday in another dismal display and Aston Villa will be the last side they want to face next given their recent form. Despite that, the Man Utd vs Aston Villa last five H2Hs are relatively promising for United so that could give them an element of confidence going into the match.

The Man Utd vs Aston Villa rivalry is one of the oldest in English football with their first encounter coming in 1892 when United were still known as Newton Heath. Man Utd vs Aston Villa last five H2Hs

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa – 10th January 2022

Man Utd faced Aston Villa four times in 2022 and the first of the meetings came in an FA Cup third-round clash at Old Trafford. It was Steven Gerrard's first and only visit to Old Trafford as Aston Villa manager and after clashing with home supporters, he saw his team go a goal down early on when Scott McTominay fired home after just eight minutes. The game never really got going after that and United went through to the fourth round.

Aston Villa 2-2 Man Utd – 15th January 2022

Just five days later, Man Utd faced Aston Villa in the Premier League at Villa Park. This one was far more action-packed than the FA Cup tie but it looked as if the result was heading the same way when Bruno Fernandes put Man Utd 2-0 up with 25 minutes to play. New signing, Phillipe Coutinho, inspired a remarkable turnaround though and it was the Brazilian's goal that made the score 2-2 after Jacob Ramsey had made it 2-1.

Aston Villa 3-1 Man Utd – 6th November 2022

In November 2022, Man Utd faced the dreaded new manager bounce when Unai Emery was appointed as manager just before they faced United at Villa Park. The Villains had previously been in poor form under Gerrard but had a spring in their step when United came to town. Leon Bailey opened the scoring after seven minutes before a Lucas Digne free-kick made it 2-0 just minutes later. United brought one back before the break before Rasmey secured the win in the second half.

Man Utd 4-2 Aston Villa – 10th November 2022

Four days later, the two sides met again at Old Trafford, this time in a League Cup match. After a drab first half, Ollie Watkins gave the visitors the lead but United were level instantly via Anthony Martial. A Diogo Dalot own goal gave Villa the advantage again on the hour mark but the home side then kicked into top gear and sailed through to the next round thanks to goals from Rashford, Fernandes and McTominay.

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa – 30th April 2023

The most recent Man Utd vs Aston Villa H2H came towards the end of the 2022/23 season. Villa were pushing hard for a European spot while Man Utd were using league games as preparation for the looming FA Cup final. The game was far from a classic with Bruno Fernandes scoring just before the break for the game's only goal. Villa ultimately qualified for the Europa Conference League while United lost the cup final.

Potential MVP – Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins had propelled his game to new heights this season and if it wasn't for Harry Kane, he would be a nailed-on starter for England. Watkins has nine goals and six assists in the Premier League this season but his record against Man Utd isn't great with just one goal in eight matches against the Red Devils. Given the form of the two sides, though, it would be a surprise if Watkins didn't add to that total on Tuesday.
