Authenticity (4.5/5): Romano links Ait-Nouri with City
Pep Guardiola is keen for a new left-back after a season of shoe-horning centre-backs on the flanks, and his priority target appears to be Wolverhampton Wanderers star Rayan Ait-Nouri.
The story comes from the very reliable Fabrizio Romano, who claims Manchester City have “asked for deal conditions” for the Algerian, who is “high on their list” of summer targets.
Value (3.5/5): Dwindling contract
The 23-year-old is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League but Wolves are unlikely to demand an exorbitant fee for him as his contract is due to expire next summer. Reports elsewhere suggest the Midlands outfit would accept an offer in the region of £40million for Ait-Nouri.
Suitability (4/5): Attacking full-back
The Algeria international, who is capable of playing as a left-back and left wing-back, is known for his ball-carrying ability and tendency to invert in midfield. He likes to frequently crash into the penalty area – a trait Guardiola would definitely admire as he wants his side to spend a lot of time in the final third.
Upgrade? (4/5): Gvardiol to play centrally
The lack of quality options at left-back forced Guardiola to rely on Josko Gvardiol to cover the area in the first half of the campaign. However, recently, the Spaniard has underlined he sees the Croatian as a central defender by pushing him centrally. A new left-back would ensure Gvardiol continues to play at the heart of the defence.
Logic (4/5): Tempting move
Ait-Nouri has enjoyed the attacking freedom at Wolves, having registered five goals and seven assists in all competitions this term. However, at City, he will get even more chances to show his talents up front, and more importantly, challenge for the biggest trophies.
Whisper+ verdict: 20/25
Ait-Nouri appears to be an ideal fit for Guardiola and his contract situation should make it easy for City to strike a deal with Wolves.
