Manchester City's relegation odds have changed sharply in the space of a week, although the movement has nothing to do with their performances on the pitch this season.
Reports on 25 September 2026 stated that an independent commission had found City guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League, covering a nine-year period dating back to 2009.
The club have confirmed their intention to appeal the ruling, but bookmakers have moved much sooner, quickly changing their prices on City finishing in the bottom three.
What punishment could Manchester City actually face?
No sanction has been confirmed yet, with the Premier League's rules giving an independent commission considerable freedom over the punishment rather than setting out a fixed scale.
The possible outcomes range from a fine running into tens of millions of pounds to a points deduction, with finance expert Kieran Maguire suggesting that City could lose between 40 and 60 points, while a transfer ban or even expulsion from the competition are also among the more severe options.
Recent cases provide some context, although neither is a perfect comparison, as Everton were initially deducted 10 points for a financial breach in 2023 before that figure was reduced to six on appeal, while Nottingham Forest were given a four-point deduction in 2024 for a smaller breach than Everton's first case.
Juventus' 15-point Serie A deduction is another figure often mentioned when looking for a comparison, although that case centred on false accounting rather than 114 upheld charges covering nine seasons and five different categories.
How have Manchester City's relegation odds changed after the verdict?
Manchester City Relegation Odds
| BOOKMAKER | ODDS |
|---|---|
| bet365 Best Price | 5/2 |
| Boylesports Best Price | 5/2 |
| Betfred | 3/1 |
| BetVictor | 3/1 |
| Betfair | 3/1 |
| Matchbook | 3/1 |
City's relegation odds have been cut sharply since the verdict, with bet365 and BoyleSports both moving to a joint-best 5/2, while Betfred, BetVictor, MatchBook and Betfair have shortened their prices to 3/1. Meanwhile, Ladbrokes, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, William Hill, Unibet, Spreadex and BetMGM had not yet listed prices for the relegation market at the time of writing.
The change looks even more striking when City's start to the season is taken into account, with Enzo Maresca's side the only Premier League club to have won all five of their opening matches against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry City, Manchester United and Sunderland.
Those results have put City top of the table on 15 points, three ahead of reigning champions Arsenal in second, with the Gunners' unbeaten start ending against Brighton.
That perfect start would count for little if the eventual punishment involves a major points deduction, as a penalty of the size being discussed would leave City facing a difficult battle to stay clear of the bottom three regardless of their results between now and May.
City had also been strongly fancied to win the title back from Arsenal before the verdict, but their price with Betfair drifted from 11/8 to 9/4 immediately afterwards, while Arsenal were cut to 8/11.
The change suggests that bookmakers now see the potential punishment as a much bigger threat to City's title hopes than anything their rivals have done on the pitch so far.
With the Premier League yet to confirm what punishment, if any, will follow the guilty verdict, relegation cannot be treated as a certainty at this stage.
The size of the movement in the betting market does, however, show how quickly the commission's findings have changed the picture around City's season, despite their perfect start on the pitch.
